I'll do some tries on my install. Do you happen to remember your orders when leaving on patrol? What area did they assign you to?

merc4ulfate, do you remember where you were assigned to go to out of Midway? They two starts basically use the same assignments, just in a slightly different order... Thanks guys. We want to track that down.

I was assigned to patrol 5 days in the north of japan (Hokkaido)

Thank you zeus. I have tried multiple times to replicate what you had, and cannot get a CTD. I have been through the text of both of the Hokkaido Patrol missions in the game, and find no issues. Just to double-check, this is the one you should get first, the "Patrol Hokkaido 1" mission, in a Mission Editor view:




Your assigned area is off of Tsugaru Straits. The map in the game would have shown a Star where the center of the circle is. My orders were:

USS Grayback SS-208
Depart December 9, 1941

Conduct anti shipping operations off of
Hokkaido Island within the designated area
for 5 days. Be aware and wary of minefields.

The other mission is "Patrol Hokkaido 2", using basically the same orders and duration, but you usually would not get that assignment until after you had completed the first, but just in case, it is a little further north, south and east of Akkeshi:




The only other questions I might ask would be: Did you start inside or outside of the harbor at Pearl? When did the crash to desktop occur? just after you clicked on the map and then the Inside or Outside harbor choice, or did you see the text "No mission too difficult" text on the black screen? Or where you in the submarine and traveling when the game crashed? Have you tried other boats and start locations? Do they seem to function well? All the detail you can remember, please. Thank you!

I explain to you
I install the stock game and apply the megamod version 0.80 Rc1.
I choose to start at Pearl Harbor on December 9, 1941 with a Gar-class submarine.
I set out to set sail from inside the harbor and when I was on the Pearl Channel with views on the Bridge and compression speed 1x and CTD
I delete the "sh4" folder in my documents and start a new campaign with sub Gar, but this time I chose to start out of port with destination to the north of Japan. on the road without ctds although the weather did not change much.

Chiming in here. In an earlier post you had mentioned Hokkaido, Japan. Do you recall your mission was to China or Japan?

I'm going to try and reproduce the CTD on my machine.

zeus, I repeat the same question as Front Runner. Was the assignment for "anti-shipping operations" (a "patrol" assignment), or to "proceed immediately to the designated area and await further orders" (a "sink" assignment)? The Patrol and Sink missions for the East China Sea are basically the same locations:

Same with you merc4ulfate, any rememberence of where you were assigned to?

I come out of Midway. Somewhere around june of 1942.

I think the assignment was around Formosa but I ignored it and ran up Bungo Suido, I found nothing there.

I kept going up to Kitakyushu. Where I sank several cargo and oilers. Now at Kitakyushu there is a narrow passage with no land batteries just north of it, so I took that passage under cover of darkness and came out north west of Hikoshima Island. After entering the Sea of Japan I ran south west down to Sasebo. As I entered Sasebo the game crashed.

I ran a Gar (standard load-out) out of Pearl, Dec.8 1941, starting inside, assigned to Area 4-Standby for orders. I had NO CTD well out to sea.

Also, PropBeanie, I made save games at; Afternoon (1515), Sunset (1649), Midnight (0015), Sunrise (0617), and Noon (1215). Upon re-load they all performed normally. Classified Set A.
During this Career test, I laid out navigation lines from PH to Midway, then to Area 4, and set waypoints all the way to Midway. I performed my savegames all along the way with periscopes up. Waypoints, navigation marks and up periscope were preserved upon re-load.

Reinstalled SH4 & FOTRSU to see what you fellas have been up to. Was about to go through the process of merging my old tweaks (which i saved away) and it seems like my tweak to the position keeper dials is now incorporated as standard. Did i see that right? Or did i prematurely reinstall my tweaks without remembering (i am getting old). If so, nice!

Two questions to get me on my way.

1. What is the ideal cruising speed for long distance? I know alot of mods tend to tweak/change this so i just want to be up to date on it.

2. I noticed my AA gun doesn't have a gunsight. Wut?

You have an AA gun?
I have a 50 cal. that will not even go +30 degrees. It is useless unless I am firing horizontal.

As to your speed question use 10 knots.

Just left Midway For 11-B. Sat there and sank a ship at least 15nm inside the designated parameter and did not get the completed message for the mission. 10 days later I found another ship and sank her and then got the completed mission. To complete the mission it said engage enemy. I thought it would complete on the first one. Is the engagement by tonnes? Not important was just curious.

August 22, 1942 2100 hours Gar class.

Since Midway gave me no further orders and allowed me to do as I wish I sailed to Truk. I love the lagoon layout I just wish it was deeper all around instead of so many shallow areas with deep channelss but this looks really nice.

There was a huge storm as I slowly made my way into the channels. I am glad they do not affect the submarines as much. The IJN however did not far as well. You had what I think is a Kuma Class Cruiser half up the dock exploding like crazy and a DD that sank near it from the storm. In all the IJN lost three ships to the storm. I surfaced and sank one Aden Maru by deck gun and one Shoho Escort Carrier on sonar bearings with torpedoes. Both were docked. Some other merchants opened fire so I left, being out of fish, and because over the course of the patrol I had take machine gun strafes, 5 or 6 deck gun hits and AA canon fire from the last merchant and my hull was at 54 percent.

That storm was something and on this patrol I ran into quite of a few bad storms that bad TDC locks hard to impossible so I used the deck gun and shot their silhouettes until they sank.

10 merchants
2 warships

10,430 total renown gained so far since the wars beginning. They haven't given me anything to spend it on however.
