Your results are due to your crews capabilities. A "Veteran" crew will fire faster, with greater accuracy, than a "Novice" crew. I don't know what "Experience" or "Efficiency" your crew has, but filling the Deck Gun positions with your best men will increase their capabilities.

In your image of "Crew Management" I don't see a Weapons/Gun specialist??:



Using Fotrs Ultimate v.56 there should be "Gun" specialists in your ranks. Their the ones that have the crossed gun barrels on their image (one is already in the Aft Deck Gun, the other is in the Damage Control Team:



There should be two of them, as you can see from the above image.

When I started a new Campaign at the "Beginning of 1945", at Pearl, with a Balao, my Deck Gun is the Default 3".50 cal. I purchased the 5" .25 cal Twin for 1500 renown and have it listed "On Boat". The Crew Management page is above, with both gun positions (showing Aft and Stern Deck Guns). One is filled, the other needs to be filled by you putting crewmen in the empty slots.




As a result, the 5" .25 Twins are "On Boat", and manned as expected:



Except for the one empty crew position I mentioned earlier (where the arrow points), the crew and guns work as needed. This Fore DG is your only position that provides the Manual use of the gun if you desire....so its as I said, your seat to fill if you want.

If you can't confirm these results by starting a new Campaign as I described....... then the problem is on your end. You've got a mod conflict; a corrupt stock game; or a corrupt game save that's messing with Fotrs Ultimate v.56.

Only 2 mods are up and running, "bigger better protractors" and "3000 Yard Bearing Tool (1280x)".

This is weird, I can also get the twin deck guns if I start a new campaign in the Beginning of 1945 from Pearl Harbour or the Asiatic.
I've had a look at all of the Fleet Boat Campaign career starts and there isn't an option to start from "Midway in the "Middle of 1944" and "Brisbane or Midway in the Beginning of 1945".
I'm not sure why Midway and Brisbane have been omitted from these 2 time periods but I'm wondering if it could be a part of what's causing one of my boats twin deck guns not to appear, I'll leave it in your hands to sort CapnScurvy out as they are more capable than mine are.

There are several of those messages like that, you've found another!... As far as I know, the "Bigger Better Protractors" works fine with FotRSU, and I'm rather sure that the bearing tool does also, but might be "heavy" on the computer, which really shouldn't be an issue. We'll have to leave the gun stuff to those much more qualified to diagnose. Still looking into the Brisbane and Midway starts. We might change those for the next version, just to see what that brings about on everyone's computers... Consultations, tweakings and cussing are ongoing...

That's good, at least we can confirm your seeing what I'm seeing. I'll admit, I don't play a Campaign through to see every aspect of what unfolds as you start;save;restart;save;restart etc. I spend most of my time waiting on the game to load to see what effect a modification does, then do it all again, rather than actually playing the game. Ducimus once said the same thing.....something like "I haven't played the game in years!" should tell you where our time is spent when modding.

Those added mods shouldn't change a thing regarding what your seeing. The 3000 Yard Bearing Tool will pull a lot of memory to display, but it won't prevent the correct equipment from being on board when it should.

As Propbeanie said, we're starting to look at what's going on with the Career Start file and the related Flash Messaging that's somewhat related. I know we've never touched them, I'm not even sure if anyone from FOTRS did?!? They could be still stock game files for all I know. Since this is new territory, we'll have to "go to school" to figure out what things do, before we can say "this will fix that".

Thanks for your report! It's this kind of information we need to push us in the right direction.

I do have a question......Did you have a "Gun Specialist" in your crew compliment when playing the Campaign save you first reported on? That picture didn't show your entire Crew Management page:



Did you have the "Gun Specialists" then, or were they missing too from your game? Your picture doesn't show all of your crew.

I'm suspecting when you say "I can also get the twin deck guns if I start a new campaign in the Beginning of 1945 from Pearl Harbour or the Asiatic", you're seeing what I'm seeing, the Gun Specialist are present....but what about when you first found the 5".25 not on your boat?

Yep, your Deck Gun specialists are just as useless as the enlisted crewmen, I expected them to hit something more often than not but that wasn't true as the pic above shows, those gun specialists aren't worth their place on this boat and until they improve their gun skills they'll be kicked off my boat every new career start.

Regarding that pic, the distance from my sub was just over 1250 yds and that tanker had 2 deck guns and a crew that could have shot a fly off of my periscope, if my useless crew were as good as those I'd use the deck gun more often instead of hiding beneath the waves like a bunch of cowards.

Moonlight, I asked if you had the "Gun Specialists" in the Crew Management page? Your answer of having "two CPO's" doesn't answer my question....you can have any crew member with a Gun Specialist rating.

Did you have them?

The only picture you've provided on them is this:



By the way, if you got your ass shot off within a duel between a Tanker and a Sub..........what does that tell you??

1250 yards is basically point blank range for deck guns.


Try firing from 3,000-4000 yards and position sub so that your broadsides are not visible.I fhave a bow mounted deck gun point your bow at target and turn just slightly ahead so your AOB from their POV is 10-20 degrees max.Same with stern if stern mounted. Having said that, sub is not a battleship and deck gun is meant to be used to finish off damage targets, sink targets not worth a torpedo due to small size, self defense(last ditch) and to bombard land targets(not a factor in the sim so far). No mater how "skilled" your gunners are, its a risk.

Like the sniper, the submarine needs a "neat" environment to inflict damage on the opponent.
Is the sniper now a coward because he does not get closer to the enemy?!?

Those 2 gun specialists are the CPO's who get kicked off the boat and replaced by two 3rdClass crewmen when I start a new career, so that's a yes I did have them.

I'm not about to waste a priceless torpedo to finish off a tanker that has already had 3 torps put into it, the gun specialists had there chance and failed miserably, they are no better than any other crewmen on the boat and that's why they aren't worth there place on this here tin can.

I usually leave the gung ho stuff to John Wayne but on that occasion I thought I would see how those new gun specialists of yours fared in a shootout with a ship that was dead in the water, and now I know I won't be making that mistake again.

Thanks Moonlight for the reply. I understand your frustration in those "Gun Specialists" not pushing you over the edge into "unbeatable territory". But, depending on the "experience" of the entire firing crew (look at the green level indicator along the left hand side of the gun crew) will only increase your chances so much. The rest is up to other factors that get calculated into the mix. It could be the AI crew is much higher in skill than the best sub crew..........well try to look at it.

If you cannot separate a computer submarine game from reality you need to see a qualified psychiatrist urgently.
Just one other thing while I'm posting on this subject because there won't be another one on it, this is MY game, MY submarine and MY crew and if I want to call those pixel generated morons a bunch of useless cowardly pillocks I will do and it's got nothing to do with YOU or ANYONE else.
