OK, think I've got it sussed.

Below is a picture, I'll give you a clue in the fact the obvious bit is fake (not the yellow crane). A few fakes were made - where is this location, and for a bonus point, why were they made?

Once you've got the aircraft figured out it shouldn't take too long to unravel the why and where.
