Good question, I believe it is a composite material, plastic could well be involved in it, although that information is probably not in the public domain.

Nope. It's not an IR or TV sensor.

EDIT: Having said that, looking at the full pic I think there might be an IR sensor just below it. Still, it's not the main object which is what I'm looking for.
