I thought War Beneath the Sea by Patrick Padfield was a good overview of all the nations' submarine forces, including the British and the Italians.

U-Boat 977 by Heinz Schaeffer
I don't know if you can find this in print or second hand but if you do it's a really good book written by someone who was there. The copy I have was printed in 1953 and has a forward by Nicholas Monsarrat. Bought it for a buck at a Flea Market.

For a general overview of the history of the battle of the Atlantic I recommend The Battle of the Atlantic by Jonathan Dimbleby, I enjoyed the read as it provided a good overview of the fight throughout the war.
