Default The Best SH for a Dynamic Campaign?

Hi there captains!

A few years back I played SH3 with the classic GWX, and recently found myself with a hankering for more submarine action. However, a lot has changed (namely with SH5) and now don't know what I should try.

In short, I'm asking for advice about which SH game have good dynamic campaigns (wolfpacks and the like - anything to make me feel like part of a larger navy instead of just a one-man navy).

I don't have a strict preference between Atlantic or Pacific, so 3, 4, or 5 will be fine.

Lastly, I'm sorry if this has been posted before! I looked around and couldn't find anything recent that answered my question specifically.

Thanks for the help!

WELCOME ABOARD!

SH5 has wolfpacks, yes, and supposedly has dynamic responses to the player's activities, i.e. the enemy beefing up defenses and rerouting convoys to counter your attacks. On the negative, SH5's overall campaign is scripted rather than random, and SH3 is still the best overall in that department.

I think I'll try SH5 after looking at some videos and browsing the forums and seeing how much work people have put in (you guys are astounding, btw.)

I think I can deal with the campaign as a whole being scripted if the missions themselves are dynamic - and I should branch out and play something other than SH3 at some point, haha.

Which version of SH5 should I get? I've seen that steam is a no-go due to some issues with particular mods; is an amazon digital download alright?

I play all 3 versions and they all have good points and bad points.

SH3 with GWX3.0 + SH3 Commander is the complete package and does not disappoint even with dated graphics and mapping by to days standards. If only this was SH5.

SH4 with a good interface and a few mods is a good alternative using the American setup to the SH3 and SH5 German ones.

SH5 needs a lot of mods to get the game to a decent level and comes with very good graphics. Can be troublesome and irritating at times.
