Default Noob question

I have 3ds max and would like to open a 3d file to start modeling but after installing and running 3ditor I can't figure out which files hold the 3d files. The dat files? I open a dat file and there are no 3d objects, just texture files, dds and tga files. Objects > conning towers dat files, submarine > dat files, I only get texture files and hex.

The files you're looking for are the .dat files inside the /sea/whatevership folders. There lie the main 3D models of the ships.

Opening a .dat file with S3D will give you a window like this one

Notice the arrow pointing at the main node of the ship and the Model Preview tab that will allow you to see the main 3D model. This main node could have multiple smaller 3D models for parts of the ship like funnels and masts, propellers and rudders, etc..

All nodes are numbered, and you can see that in node number 2 of that Yamato is the main 3D model. If you get into it, it'sll give you the option to export it, usually in .obj format which can be edited by most 3D edition programs. Collada's .dae format is also allowed (but I've never used it, so I can't be more specific than that).

Hope this helps you with the basics. The submarines, conning towers, libraries etc work the same way.

Thank you. There are "tones" of ships but where are the submarine models?

The airplanes are in the Air folder, ships are in the Sea folder, and submarines are in the Submarine folder.
