Default Veterans Day

To all those who have worn the uniform honorably this day is for you.

Armed Forces day is for those who wear the uniform.
Veterans day is for those who once wore the uniform honorably.
Memorial day is for those who gave their lives in service to our country.

The first two are joyous celebrations and the last a somber recollection of the price paid for our freedom.

Let's see...

This year alone the VA medical system has given me new eyes, a lot of attention to my various ailments. Today alone I had a free lunch from Olive Garden, my car's oil changed for free at Jiffy Lube, and a friend and I are going to dinner later at a place called Golden Corral. I'd say I've been more than adequately repaid for my pitiful service.

Happy Veteran's day, y'all!

I feel a little guilty on Veteran's Day. I was relatively safe from harm at nice duty stations in Europe that counted as sea duty. My first duty station I was given the choice of Greece, Italy, or Bermuda. I'd have paid to go to any of those places. Crete was great!

Salute to those who went to far worse places than I did, and had far worse jobs.

Well, I feel guilty too. I was a radioman on a destroyer. Yes, we did fire support for the marines and escort duty for the carriers, but I never felt I was in any danger, and in the end it turns out I wasn't. Every time I tell someone at the VA about those feelings the answer is always the same: "At least you served. If they had sent you to worse places you would have gone. Around here that counts for something."
