But I LOVE DAS BOOT..

u571 has the special effects and not the "cheezy weird acting" that many older movies had (including Das boot)

Das boot is in a league of its own.. But I like newer films.. Obvious effects make it seem much more real to me!

U-571 is a good movie if you are an action movie fan. If you like submarines and naval history at all, it is a travesty from first frame to last. It's like SH5 - lots of lovely effects coupled with almost nothing else worth mentioning. It's a joke, period.

"The Sand Pebbles" is another great (but often forgotten) naval movie on an epic scale, set on a US Gunboat in China with a great cast including Steve McQueen, Richard Crenna & a very hot Candice Bergen in her first role.

also good & rarely mentioned

"San Demetrio London" the story of a crippled tanker's journey home through a U-Boat filled Atlantic Ocean.

In terms of what's coming up the BBC are just about to air a 2 part 3+ hour drama on the sinking of the Laconia it looks great check out the blurb here

Are you calling SH5 the "U571 of Subsims"?

I like it!

While I agree that it was a fantastic movie, one of my favorites, I have to disagree about how it treated the book, or books. That movie was made of alot of little pieces from many of the Aubrey/Maturin books which I thought was bad form if they wanted to do a sequel. Even the title was a mix of the first and 10th books. He was a Captain in the books (and movie) by the time of this main story, not a Master and Commander, Maturin never once wore his famous wigs.. etc etc....

However, the worst affront to the writing was they completely changed the nationality of the protagonist. (In the book they were after an American privateer, not a French one.. I guess they figured a French enemy would sell better in the US market ) When you have a movie that is about 2 warships, and you change the country where one is from, I call that a massive change from the literature.

It was that darn 'lady fish'. The voice anyway.

Crusty is also a lovable character.

Good call on 'Mister Roberts', always loved the story about that dern palm tree.
Thank god nobody mentioned 'Operation Petticoat',

Ya think getting the wife to sit thru 'Das Boot' was hard ? Try getting her to sit thru 'K19- The Widowmaker'
