Default 1942...

Started a new career after my last kaleun made it to December of '44 before becoming another name on a list. It's September of 42 now and I have just fired every torp on my type vii, only to have none hit. The last salvo I fired at the large convoy I have shadowed for two days was set for the shallowest depth and impact fuses. Out of curiosity I used external camera and every torp ran at least 20m deep. I know there were torp issues in 42, but I don't remember it being THIS bad. I'm rearming at a tender and on my return trip I have half a mind to just engage with the deck gun.

Any ideas if this is just bad luck or did my file tinkering cause this?

What was the weather? Which version of SH3 are you playing? By which I mean, stock game, GWX, LSH2015, and mods, if any?

I am an old veteran Grew Wolves player but have recently been giving LSH2015 a go. That mod, or a component within LSH itself [not sure which, as it is a composite of work done by many people] replicates the early war trouble with torpedoes. I am finding that torpedo attacks while the sea is rough is a very dicey proposition. In fact, I am at present sometimes avoiding getting into convoys when it is winds 15 MPS, as it cause the torpedoes to run deeper than set. All that work of getting inside an escort perimeter, only to see a string of duds is very discouraging. I have been reluctant to attack a convoy in such weather when I only have a small number of torpedoes left. I prefer to save them for later targets of opportunity, as long as I have sufficient fuel to stay at sea for a while.

Although some would find this irksome, I am quite enjoying the uncertainty of it all, as well as the more realistic tonnage scores. It is nice to sink stuff, but I want my game to be a historical re-enactment, not an arcade experience. Whereas before I could often take down even some larger vessels with one well placed eel, now I find myself giving bigger ships at least two, which is how it was often done in the war. This results in lower tonnage scores, but really, who wants to come onto a forum and crow about a 100,000+ ton patrol, when even the best skippers in real life, such as Kretschmer, Prien, Topp, etc. managed at best 100,000 to 200,000 [Otto K had over 200K] over their whole careers?

However, it is your game and you are free to play it how you enjoy it. That is why we play, to get something out of it, and each player has his own expectations of a game, whether that be historical recreation and simulation, or just a good old shoot em up.

Edit: I just saw at the bottom of your post what looks to be a mod list. Is that your current setup? I am not familiar with those. I hope my advice helps, but if not, perhaps someone else will be able to. Good luck.

That mod list is for SH4. I'm running grey wolves with a couple of H.Sie's patches. Been using the same setup for over a year, but have recently modified some numbers so new subs don't cost an arm and a leg. It's been forever since I started a game before '42.

Ok, so here was the setup: large convoy heading west, wind 2-4, seas very mild and visibility unlimited. Spent two days in game shadowing the convoy and identifying targets. I set up for my attack at dusk by getting in front of the convoy, diving, and waiting for lead escorts to pass. Once the escorts went by, I went to periscope depth, got my angles, set depth to 5m(for the first run), impact fuses and let all torps (TII) loose. No hits. Period. Frustrated, I dove and reloaded (TI), withdrew and set up for another attack at about midnight since the convoy was scootin.

Second attack at midnight was going good until it came time to fire. I let the rest of my torps loose (TIs) set for 3m and impact fuses. Followed one of them with the camera and it was running a good 20m deep. At this point I about threw my monitor across the room. Two hours and 10 fish later I had nothing.

Right now I'm assuming Bdu got a batch of lemons that won't keep depth.

Hmm, that is very heartbreaking and the most miserable of experiences. Been there buddy so I feel your pain.

At this point, it is either a statistical anomaly [highly doubt it, though] or something got messed up in a vital configuration when you edited your boats. I can't say for certain, not being a real modder myself. I make minor tweaks, but not of the nature you described.

Hang in there, I am hoping someone will be able to help you.

I figure I would ask here since I don't have much time to trouble shoot since it's coming up on time for national exams for my paramedic license. I'm going to try a few more convoy attacks and see if the problem resolves itself in 1943 since I only have a few months to go.

At any rate. I'm just going to pawn this off as "defective" torpedos and see where it takes me. I did score 1 hit out of 3 last night, but got DC'ed so bad I had to "teleport" back to base instead of making the return trip past England.

Good luck with the exams. My son is a 29 year old full-time firefighter, 10 year veteran. Hats off to you EMS folks. You save our bacon when bad things happen, or make a valiant effort to do so.

Sounds like he has a few years on me! I hit my 5 year mark as a volunteer in January and finally got a full time job on top of that. Nothing is better than playing SH3 on those 36 hour shifts between calls and training.

Now to get my boat to survive 1942.

36 hours? Wow. My son does 24 hours shifts, whereas a few years ago they were 10, 14 on the overnight shift. I trust they allow you to nap on downtime? Otherwise, that would be a brutal shift.

Yes, lol, we built living quarters upstairs. The only downside is from 0700-1700hrs we have our "official" duty day and have to be awake and training or "look" like we are productive. I tend to start up SH3 and in between studying I pull it up and go after convoys. Need to do something to relieve stress!
