Sony has remastered both the theatrical and 60-minute longer director's cut for Blu-ray and will include both versions in a two-disc set. In addition, Das Boot on Blu-ray will feature nearly 3 hours of all-new bonus features highlighted by a retrospective documentary with director Wolfgang Petersen.



Das Boot will be presented on Blu-ray in 1080p video and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The complete suite of bonus features is as follows:

Edit: the ASIN is B004SUDQ4U, just search for that (using the Subsim link of course!). Just pre-ordered mine.

I've seen a few comments online (maybe even here) from people who saw the European release who didn't think the quality was much improved on Blu Ray and doubted whether it was worth having. However I've never seen the original theatrical release and altho I probably won't like it as much, being used to the longer versions, this will no doubt be my one shot at actually owning a copy of it.

My next computer may include a Blu-Ray player, but I don't own a television, so I'm bummed because the extras look kind of nice.

I have an original VHS copy. Of course the longer versions are better, and the longer they are the better they are, but if they're giving it to you as part of the set it's worth having at least as a curiosity. And if it hasn't been monkeyed with it will have the one scene that none of the longer versions have.

One thing I'll be curious to know: In my VHS copy of the original theatrical release the water is actually blue, not green. I don't know how, where or why the change was made, but in all the underwater shots it's blue. What will it look like in this version?

Actually I take it back, my life won't be completely complete until I have a transcript of all the original dialogue (from the uncut version) in German, so I know what they are actually saying onscreen and not just what the subtitlers chose to include and how they translated it.

Or a copy of the full original German screenplay. Either/or would make me happy.

I know what you mean. I have the director's cut and uncut DVD and subtitles are different in both movies, not just english, but french as well and even the french and english subtitles don't say the same thing.

Yeah, that one's kind of bizarre - I'm pretty sure the spoken word is "Eier" which is definitely eggs. IIRC even the crate he's carrying is marked to indicate the contents. I think "Eier" is also used as a slang term for testicles but I'm not sure how they ended up with "screws" in the subtitles.

The only thing I find odd about the NA-release is that the English audio doesn't seem to be included - I think it's pretty cool that all the actors dubbed thir own voices - provides an authentic feeling with the German accents.
Regarding the English subs: they are exactly the same as what they say in the English audio dub. I assume they changed the dialogue in some scenes to stay lip-sync.

Should be no problem - as long as you have a software player and your gpu & monitor both support HDCP - which all the newer devices do.

Odd, as the water is supposed to be green. Two possibilities: they screwed up the colour correction while they made the VHS or - more likely: NTSC - or as we say Never The Same Colour . Just tune the hue on the TV - this was always the first thing I did when I was in an North American home where the TV was running - job habit

Oh, I always thought you were an Austrian immigrant, due to your nickname.
I just watched the scene. He says "Warschau! Eier!" - "Watch out! Eggs!" - in my version this sentence is not subbed.

Another odd thing that I noticed while looking for this scene:
When our narrator gets the Tauchretter thrown at him, in the English version they say that it prevents him to smell Frenzen's feet, while in the original they talk about Frenzen's farts
I don't want to smell neither off them...

Then I think you should start one every day, in which you transcribe the actual German dialogue spoken in each scene. 1 day, 1 scene. From the uncut version, just imagine how many Das Boot threads we'd have then!

I'm pretty sure that I have a version that is subtitled as "farts" and one that is subtitled as "feet." IIRC one version - I think it's the longer uncut one - has English that is significantly "cleaned up" instead of translated into subtitles that are more accurate and therefore more crude in some scenes. Which is kind of amusing considering that nothing was done about Thomsen's little exclamation in plain English in the nightclub bathroom.

I always thought "Watch out! Eggs!" made perfect sense, the guy is walking through a busy zentrale carrying a very fragile bit of goods, he's just letting everyone know to be careful and not jostle him unless they want to be eating breakfast out of a tin a little sooner than usual.

But "Watch out! Screws!" ???

That makes no sense at all.

Considering the secondary German usage of "Eier," maybe the subtitler just got his nuts and screws confused.

Perhaps he was a disguntled crew member/cook and he was trying to say "Balls!!"

Subtitles are an iffy matter at best. I saw a Japanese film once with two sets of subtitles, one in English and the other in French. They took up almost the lower third of the frame. On top of this, the producers apparently went for cheap and hired university students to do the subtitles. The English subs read like a frat boy version of the dialog ("Chaps, His Lordship is really a bummer..."); the French subs were apparently done by a socialist ("Our decadent Lord is defying the will of the people..."). The film itself was just an ordinary samurai film and not at all political...
