Driving cold war subs?

I've been reading some posts on some people taking models from sub command and putting them into DW. I'd like to do this with the Alpha SSN, LA class, Typhoon, and Ohio and have them for models rather than the 688i akula and seawolf. The reason i guess is that the cold war is over and the world is at peace. I can get more absorbed by the game if it was converted to the cold war era as I can think of a heck of a lot more scenarios to play and make.
Can anyone tell me how to do this to my own game? I don't multiplay so I'm not worried about changing things around. I know you have to extract the models from the 3dobject file but what program do I use to do it? I'm not to worried about the loadouts or interface, I'll just keep the stock ones.
