Ahmed Fuad Pasha changes his title to King of Egypt from Sultan of Egypt, after the United Kingdom recognized the sovereignty of Egypt.


The Rand Rebellion in South Africa comes to an end, as South African troops forcibly crush the rebelling miners. Around 150 to 200 people were killed during the course of the fighting.

Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Poland sign the Warsaw Accord to respect the sovereignty of each other's nations.

USS Langley is recommissioned as the U.S. Navy’s first aircraft carrier after it completed conversion from a collier.

The East Karelian Uprising ends in a Soviet Russian victory, as Karelian and Finnish rebels are defeated and Finland and Soviet Russia agree to maintain their borders. Rebel fighters in Karelia.


Ship Losses:

Kullaberg (Sweden) The cargo ship ran aground near Elleness, West Lothian, United Kingdom. She was later refloated and beached at Elie, Fife. Refloated again on 3 April.

Italian fascist Giovanni Giuriati becomes the new President of the Free State of Fiume after a coup d’état.


Queen Mary inaugurates the newly rebuilt London Waterloo station.

British submarine H42 sinks with the loss of all 24 crew after it is accidentally rammed by the destroyer HMS Versatile off Gibraltar.


Ship Losses:

HMS H42 (Royal Navy) The H-class submarine was rammed off Gibraltar by HMS Versatile ( Royal Navy) and sank with the loss of all 22 crew.
Sakaki Maru (Japan) The cargo ship collided with Eastern Sailor ( United States) in the Whangpo River, Shanghai, China and was beached.
Salamanca (Norway) The cargo ship was abandoned in the Bay of Biscay. Her crew were rescued by Argonne ( France).

24th March 1922

Six Catholic civilians are killed in Belfast, Northern Ireland by suspected members of the Ulster Special Constabulary, as sectarian violence grows in the region.


The Republic of Central Lithuania, a Polish puppet state centered on Vilnius, is incorporated into Poland after a contested election. Polish troops celebrating the incorporation of Vilnius.

Curvos (Portugal) The schooner was destroyed by fire at Falmouth, Cornwall, United Kingdom.
Glenmore (United Kingdom) The cargo ship struck the wreck of Treveal ( United Kingdom) in the English Channel off St Alban's Head, Dorset and foundered. Her crew survived.
Maggie Read (United Kingdom) The coaster was destroyed by fire off Ornsay, Inner Hebrides.

Two Russian ultranationalists attempt to assassinate former Russian Foreign Minister Pavel Milyukov (left) in Berlin. His friend Vladimir Dmitrievich Nabokov (right, father of author Vladimir Nabokov) is killed attempting to stop the assassins.


Two Koreans attempt to assassinate former Japanese Minister of War Tanaka Giichi (pictured) in Shanghai, but he escapes unharmed. In the crossfire, an American woman is killed and four others are wounded.

U.S. Senate votes to ratify the Washington Naval Treaty, which limits the size of the navies of the Great Powers, as well as a treaty limiting the use of submarines and poison gas in warfare.

Majestic (United Kingdom) The ocean liner ran aground at Pagensand, Schleswig-Holstein. She was refloated on 30 March.

General Currie (United Kingdom) The schooner came ashore at Saint-Pierre, Saint Pierre and Miquelon. She was refloated on 3 April, but capsized whilst being towed into port.

The Irish Free State Act is passed by the British Parliament and given Royal Assent, which brings force of law to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which was signed December of last year.

Turkish First Army conduct military exercises at Ilgin. Turkey is reorganizing its army as the ongoing Greco-Turkish war remains at a stalemate.


Members of the Ulster Special Constabulary/Royal Irish Constabulary murder six Catholic civilians, including a child, in Belfast, supposedly in retaliation for the killing of an RIC officer by the IRA. Funeral procession for the victims.


Charles, the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, has passed away at the age of 34 while in exile on the island of Madeira, Portugal.

April 3rd 1922] On Vladimir Lenin's designation of a successor, Joseph Stalin was made the new General Secretary of the Communist Party in Soviet Russia. (Lenin and Stalin in 1922).

Suwa Maru (Japan) The cargo ship ran aground on the White Rock, off Swatow, China. She was abandoned as a total loss on 13 April. Her crew were rescued by a British steamship.

Lys (United Kingdom) The cargo ship collided with The Baron ( United Kingdom) at the mouth of the River Usk and was beached. She was refloated on 8 April.
Peveril (United Kingdom) The cargo ship sprang a leak at Reval, Estonia and was beached.
