Default Chief Bottlewasher said post here or be keelhauled

Okay maybe it wasn't compulsory but I know how old forums from the dawn of the Internet era are run.

I'm one of those cheeky younguns old men gripe about playing ball on their lawn and wrenching on cars that are too slow to be so loud. But, back in my wee tyke days my father introduced me to a lady named Ms. Dos and the world of computer games. I curse his name to this day.

I cut my teeth on Silent Service II, but the one thing I hated was when you got DC'd it gave you that confounded animation screen and you could never maneuver worth a darn so I always ended up getting sunk by one measly destroyer escorting a herd of merchies. Also, I was young, dumb, and impatient. When Silent Hunter came out my grandmother got it for me to go with the new computer she'd bought me and I was hooked, at least until I dialed up the realism and started getting murdered. Then I discovered the likes of Counterstrike and Battlefield and well there was about of decade of that. It was not until recently that I decided I liked games I could play for an hour or two without giving myself an aneurysm or a hand cramp. Growing up and not being an overly impatient hormonal teenager anymore apparently ingrained some patience and tact and now I can evade 2-4 quite unhappy destroyers after sinking four of their precious chickens The first time I managed to escape without having to resort to violent measures such as face-feeding them torpedoes or making a date with crush depth due to damage and flooding, I felt like I'd navigated a rite of passage (Truth be told I was out of torpedoes). After a few more tries I was able to repeat the feat! Imagine that!

Basically I came here to learn to not die as often; I'd like to get at least one career past 5 patrols before doing something stupid, and also inquire about some of the more in-depth game mechanics.

Default Howdy

You have come to the right place.

Among the forum membership you will find many with vast experience on sub patrol. Some even have real life experience.

Remember to save often, like before an engagement. You can always analyse your errors, reload last save, and try again. That is not cheating. That is being more aggressive.

First goal should be to get a patrol done without having to reload saves. Then worry about tonnage. You learn with each incident. If you make the same mistakes again, you don't really die!
