^ Yes, the He 219 "Uhu" (~Owl, pronounced Oo-hoo in german like the sound the bird makes)
The first "real" night fighter being built for this purpose. The story of the german night fighters seems to be a largely untold one, maybe because the allies still seem not to know why they won the war. Hint: It was not the night bombing campaigns. Here the photo from where i copied the detail, as a US prize after the war: The unique features were the nose wheel (the 219 being the first ever german plane to be equipped with such, it had to turn/twist during retracting to fit under the cockpit), and the ejection seats for pilot and navigator. It also had a pressurized cockpit and efficient heating system. It seems to have been quite a good plane from pilot's reports, there was almost a rebellion by night fighter pilots and their leaders, because Mr. Milch (being his usual daft egomanic self) tried to hinder the production since he favoured the BF 110 G in the night fighter role. He even tried to bribe Ernst Heinkel to stop production of the 219 The pilots that flew the 219 had a different opinion, from speed to manouverability, to armament and the rear radar. So only around 250 have been built, they first flew in 1943 and then until the end of the war, with some types being lightened to hunt night fighter Mosquitos. As usual at the time, too little and - if not too late - hindered by the own government. This is quite a good story about the He 219 (in english): Part 1: http://horseformer.blogspot.com/2014...-i-owl-in.html Part 2: http://horseformer.blogspot.com/2014...-and-bird.html Congrats to you Jim, over to you

Hm, I've stumbled across so many very nice palaces, temples, and other landmarks and examples of outstanding architecture tonight, it's a shame I've never made it to India.
Allright. What's this?
