I really like that scene when Hitler goes into a rage and throws his coloured pencils down and declares the war is lost, the times I read that in books. Classic film one of the best films I have ever seen on the last days of the Berlin Battle.

Gotta agree with you there Steed. I really thought the shots of when everyone in the cellar is haveing a huge party and outside the city is falling apart was very well done. It just made me thing they did not want to face up to what was going to happen to them so they tryed to lose themselfs in drink. Was glad the truedel Jungel made it out safe she just seem to be a rabbit caught in the headlights.

I really enjoyed this movie a lot. It's a very well cast film, and it certainly left an impact on me. I recall all the controversy surrounding it before it was even released.

Highly recommended.

It is a tremendous film. It has almost the same impact as Das Boot in terms of telling the war from a different side. Its not done enough, in my opinion

I would point out that the real Frau Jungel didn't make it out safe, that was dramatic licence on the part of the film makers

And some of her actions by her own admission are controversial and ambigious. Downfall is one of the best films about the last war made but its not completely accurate and one or two of its choices for hero's are 'interesting'

Stalingrad is a great movie. I own it on DVD, though my only complaint is the quality of the digital tranfer is horrible (Fox Lorber), and doesn't do this fantastic film justice. I would love to see another studio take this film and do a quality transfer.

Took a lot of restraint not to mention Criterion again.

Opps.

I've see Stalingrad and thought it was great. I'll have to get Downfall out on DVD. Might do that later this week.

I should like to get Stalingrad :hmm:

As for Downfall - one of my favorite movies ever, certainly a masterpiece of German cinema on the same scale as Das Boot

One funny thing - the film was reportedly shot in St. Petersburg, Russia, which I agree sometimes looks a LOT like Berlin in 1945 (complete with the state of relative ruin in some parts) - a lot more so than today's Berlin, in fact!
