Nope not a gun but you are spot on about the cropping...when you see the picture in full you will realise it was the only cropping possibility that wouldn't give the game away.

Not a wing spar locator and there is no part of a Bucaneer on view but you are barking up the right tree.

AWACS weren't in the RAF inventory at the time as far as I am aware.

Second last clue...they are part of a British military aircraft in the making.

Remember the original question:

If you're not absolutely sure whether or not AWACS was used by the UK at this time then that suggests it was maybe the 60's, when RAF aircraft tended to be natural metal or white overall. If it was nonetheless military then the green colour would suggest instead an Army aircraft, which would most likely then make it a helicopter, which would then suggest that the top part is a rotor blade...

You take me too literally.....I was referring to the current AWAC of which I have been aboard two...they are No8 Sqn based at RAF Waddington and became operational in 1991 iirc.

Prior to those we had the Shackleton but I digress...my apologies.

The time era is not the 60's and the picture is not a rotor blade.

Brain slipped out of gear for a moment there: I'd forgotten about the Shack.

If it's fibreglass with a mounting ring then that still suggests some kind of rotating radar housing: can you say or not yet?

Oh I can well imagine...I've waited quite a while to put something up I've not posted previously therefore setting a challenge

I'm surprised HB and Oberon haven't been around much lately....themewise especially HB (a further clue possibly).
