Default DDG 1000 Costs Soar by $3 Billion

http://www.dodbuzz.com/2014/05/06/dd...-by-3-billion/

Quote:
The cost for the Navy’s new DDG 1000 destroyer have risen by $3 billion since 2009, raising the cost per ship by roughly $1 billion, according to a recent report by the Congressional Research Service.
I don't mind the cost going up ... sounds like one hell of a ship when she's finished.

1. The ship is built with a radar cross-section reducing tumblehome hull and an electric drive propulsion system.

2. The DDG 1000 is built with what’s called dual-band sonar technology which uses both medium and high-frequency detection.
Medium sonar frequency is engineered to detect ships and submarines, whereas high-frequency sonar adds the ability to avoid sea-mines.

3. The ship also has a 155mm long range, precision-capable gun called the Advanced Gun System made by BAE Systems.
The weapon can, among other things, fire a munition called the Long-Range Land Attack Projectile, which can strike target at ranges out to 64 nautical miles.

4. The ship has a reduced crew size of 142 sailors, compared to the roughly 300 sailors needed aboard Navy Aegis destroyer and cruisers.

5. The ship has a displacement of 15,482 tons, the DDG 1000 is 65-percent larger than existing 9,500-ton Aegis cruisers and destroyers.

6. The ship has a integrated power system, which includes its electric propulsion, helps generate up to 58 megawatts of on-board electrical power.

7. The ship is also built with a new kind of vertical launch tubes that are engineered into the hull near the perimeter of the ship.
Called the Peripheral Vertical Launch System, the tubes are integrated with the hull around the ship’s periphery in order to ensure that weapons can keep firing
should the ship be damaged. Instead of having all of the launch tubes in succession or near one another, the DDG 1000 has spread them out in case of damage.

I like that number 7 maybe subs should bring back stern tubes

If a submarine is damaged to the point that its forward torpedo tubes are unusable, stern tubes won't matter.

Remember the USS San Francisco was just cruising along when it hit an uncharted undersea mountain causing much damage, but she was still able to make it to port.

In a time of war it could be a depth charge or a surface ship or another submarine that damages the fwd torpedo room.

My thoughts of the future of submarine warfare lie with the diesel-electric boats still yet to come, perhaps they could benefit from a designed after torpedo room if for nothing else to lay mines and evade any pursuit or even fire decoy's.

Speaking of the future ... how about a rail gun on a retiring Ohio class boat? That could ruin your day, "battle surface" "battle surface"

Remember? I was out on patrol when it happened. The whole crew was made aware of it. The starboard side tubes where intact and the port side sustained damage to the outer doors. Most of the damage was to the forward ballast tanks. And if I remember correctly they had to figure out a way to use the diesel as the low pressure blower to keep her afloat to make it home.

Diesel boats will be around for quite some time as they provide a cost effective way of maintaining a submarine fleet for nations with a smaller budget.

A rail gun on an Ohio? It would make a great mod but as soon as you surface to use it their goes your best asset. Stealth.

What I'd be worried about is there could well be a Chinese copy out there not too long after completion and at a fraction of the cost.
