Ouch, man.

(When you read that out loud in your head, imagine Sammy Davis Jr. saying it. I dunno why but it's funnier that way.)

I'm afraid to ask what this is?

I'm afraid krashkart may have mistaken it for "Brownies?"

Good god, I thoughts to myself, "maybe the internetz knows what a brony is?"

So I looked it up:
Quote:
Bronies simply means people who are of an older age group and like to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. There is nothing particularly exciting about this, but they make a big deal out of it.

Jump on to a forum most places online, and you will see these people often pushing their fandom. As in, you will be on a forum for cars, and someone will have their display picture as a pony, and all their posts will be about ponies. Then when people accuse them of being off topic, they go into a rant about acceptance, as if watching a cartoon is some sort of big revelation.

Subculture is one thing, but it is a totally other thing to push it into people's faces and then get upset. It would be like heavy metal fan jumping on to a My Little Pony forum and spending their whole time talking about metal, and then getting upset that they aren't well received.

BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT BRONIES.

AFTER I KNEW ABOUT BRONIES.

And I still dare anyone to watch a few episodes of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and then try to say the same sort of thing. I do know a few people who were like "this is alright but seriously guys, I don't understand why you're crazy over it" but I don't know anyone who actually hated it. Took me a while to convert, myself (and yes, I initially thought bronies were idiotic and creepy), but after actually sitting down to watch it I can say that this is easily the best children's show of the past decade. And if you have a problem with adults who like good kids' cartoons, then something is seriously wrong with you.

I actually met Andrea Libman (the voice actress for Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy) this weekend at a local event. She was super-nice and was actually pretty impressed with the behaviour of the show's adult fans, who by and large are socially normal and good people, hardly different from the average nerd or collector of shiny trinkets. Not like those creepy ones who sit around and pretend to be Nazi submarine captains in their basement all weekend

(all in good jest, of course )

I bought my kids My Little Pony toys almost thirty years ago.

That's about it.

You're old Steve, you don't count

It's worth pointing out though that "bronies" as such are a reference to the new series that started airing in late 2010 and has very little in common with the old My Little Pony of 30 years ago other than, well, ponies. Very different style, presentation, characters, themes. I can't look at the old stuff without cringing either (it's old, poorly written, very conservative in the way it portrays girls and what they like), but the new show is pretty cool. It's got a very modern style, diverse cast, and is really well-written (for a little girls' show, which it still is no matter what some bronies claim). I'd be pretty horrified to associate myself with the old pony cartoons too, but this new one's pretty neat.

The difference between the old MLP series and the new one is massive, and yes I speak from experience having seen both.
The new series is much less saccharine in its presentation, yes there's still lessons about friendship and such forth, but it is genuinely funny in many places and cute in others. All in all a feel good show.
Furthermore, it's not often that the creators of a show actually react and appreciate their fanbase as the ones of Friendship is Magic have done.
A good example is Derpy who began life as an animation error and has since, through the fans, actually become canon and gotten her own voice actress.
It's obviously not everyones cup of tea, and I'm not going to stand here and tell you all that you should watch it and if you don't then you're being offensive to bronies or some such nonsense, however I have had a good smile and chuckle out of watching it so far and I'm glad I'm not alone in this respect.

I didn't say I watched the old show either, or that I used it as a comparison. I just bought toys for my kids.

You guys seem a little defensive.
