Default "Up Periscope" James Garner

Hi enlisted so I could download some old Silent Hunter 1 files. I thought as tribute to James Garner I would watch "Up Periscope" while my boat was preparing for patrol.

Salute

WELCOME ABOARD!

Up Periscope was probably the first submarine book I ever read, and the movie was probably the first one I saw starring James Garner, or at least the earliest I remember.

Good choice, and I might just grab a copy and watch it again myself. It's only been 55 years!

Oh my goodness! You must have seen it on the big screen. Must have been something in those days since it was in color.

I watched "Destination Toyko" yesterday but "Up Periscope" really makes you feel the confined spaces in the submarine.

I really don't remember. My dad might have taken me to see it, since I was only nine at the time. Or I might have seen it on TV a couple of years later.

part way through the movie, just after they were attacked on the surface by a Japanese fighter (which I was surprised did somewhat look like a zero) and the exec officer was killed ordering the boat to dive.

Interesting how many submarine movies include this type of scene where a officer orders the boat to submerge at the cost of their own life. (I forgot details of this true historic event) Also interesting how many of these movies also include slipping through a submarine net.

Ah the USS Growler, thank you ETR3(SS)

I guess the movie "Operation Pacific" with John Wayne also recreates this, next on my movies to watch.
