Default 1st person frustrations...dear devs, take note.

I just watched this little gem on youtube, and I think the author has valid points:

indeed, going to third person temporaly hasn't any sense. But I think the right place to post this thread is steam forums

I also do not like how scopes are moved.

He does make some good points. I will say this.

to think that Uboat is a game where you play as ONE character is where i think everyone is messing up. You arent playing as any ONE character.

In Silent Hunter III - you were the Uboat commander, and thats it. all the other NPCs had their routines and tasks they performed robotically with zero input from you.

In Uboat, you can take control of any officer to get a specific job done. so it may be that you will find yourself in a combat situation that you want to assign an officer to the hydrophones or the deck gun and THEN pop out to another officer and assign him to something else. To get dropped instantly into first person view when you assign to the hydrophone or deck gun etc - would hinder this jumping from officer to officer to make things happen. its a pretty minor complaint when a simple flick of the mousewheel will put you in FPS view.

Uboat always has a lot going on, dont believe me? well just get jumped by a pair of sunderlands. Your trip to the sea floor with a sub full of dead men will be swift if you arent expedient and methodical in who you assign to what job, whether or not he has someone assisting him, wether or not you prioritize large repairs over small ones. No sense in having your chief engineer changing light bulbs when you have a hatch taking water and flooding the bow compartment.

are we accustomed to this style of play? No we as subsimmers are not - SH SHII SHIII SHIV SHV etc have all gotten us used to standing there brainlessly while watching a little wrench symbol show us repair progress and having nothing really to do with it. Damage control in Uboat is everything, and it is far and away different from the old kindergarten style of clicking on the yellow compartment on some schematic drawing and waiting for it to be repaired. damage control is one of my favorite parts of this game.

the conning tower steps need to be fixed. yes.

the manning of deck guns of AA guns probably should be instantly first person. but thats a matter of personal preference.

as or playing cards - yes, playing cards is a gemmick and it serves one function and one function only in the game - boosting morale of the crew. thats it. to think that you are going to click "play cards" and get an in depth game of go fish, poker, or slap jack etc going with 3 other AI crewmen is expecting a bit much i think

Just like assigning an officer to the galley to "cook" - do players really want to go full blown Gloria Childs? select the ingredients you want in your stew, set the stove to simmer, find a lid that fits the pot, set a kitchen timer.. i wouldnt think so. but thats just me.

The game offers a first person perspective mode, but literally nothing in the way of game play is changed, except you dont get a 3rd person view during FPP only play.

perhaps the gameplay could be tweaked to always keep you in FPP mode, never assign the player, and automate all the NPCs so you dont have to be so involved in assigning one guy to repair the hatch, another to repair the pipe and a third to turn the pump on, and finally a fourth with 2 assistants to bail water to the control room bildge... of course with all that taken away, prepare for a lot of standing around watching
