Unicorn (United Kingdom) The coaster foundered off Rame Head, Cornwall with the loss of three of her five crew.

Ship Losses:

Pioneer #2 (United States) During a voyage from Bellingham, Washington, to Snug Harbor, Territory of Alaska, under tow by the steamer North Star ( United States) with no people or cargo aboard, the 21-ton scow sank off Cape Hinchinbrook (60°14′N 146°39′W) in Southeast Alaska after her tow line parted during a gale.

10th April 1923

General Liam Lynch, the Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army, was fatally wounded in an ambush by the Irish Free State Army at the Knockmealdown Mountains in County Tipperary, a pivotal moment that would bring an end to the Irish Civil War.


The Krupp workers shot by French soldiers on March 31 are buried in Essen. The Reichstag holds a memorial service for the Essen victims, which is also attended by Reich President Friedrich Ebert.

The Abbey Theatre (Dublin) premieres Sean O'Casey's tragic comedy The Shadow of a Gunman. In the play, O'Casey takes a critical look at the Irish independence movement against Great Britain.

India: Englishwoman Mrs Ellis is murdered at Kohat and her 17-year-old daughter Molly Ellis is kidnapped. This photograph of the successful search-and-rescue mission by Lillian Starr was taken in Khanki Bazar before the group returned to British territory.

The first appearance of Count Dracula on film was seen as the Hungarian silent movie "Drakula halála" ("The Death of Dracula") premiered in Budapest, with actor Paul Askonas as the vampire.

12th Congress of the Communist Party; Trotsky denounces the "scissors crisis", that is to say the growing gap between industrial and agricultural prices.

Cité d'Aleth (France) The schooner was abandoned in the Atlantic Ocean (46°47′00″N 6°46′30″W). Her crew were rescued by Drake ( United Kingdom).

In Mülheim (at the Ruhr river) people under communist leadership ransack local shops. The raids continue till 20th April 1923. 8 people die.

The Gay Gordon (Newfoundland) The schooner foundered in the Atlantic Ocean (41°40′N 41°55′W). Her crew were rescued by Hollinside ( United Kingdom).

Ship Losses:

Dunmail (United Kingdom) The ship foundered in the Bristol Channel. Her crew were rescued by Thamesmead ( United Kingdom).

24th April 1923

"French Prevent League Inquiry on Rule of Saar".


Ship Losses:

Stranger (United States) The schooner was destroyed by fire in the Gulf of Mexico. Her crew were rescued.
Mossamedes (Portugal) The cargo ship, with 237 people on board, ran aground at Cape Frio, Namíbia, and was evacuated by lifeboats. She was a total loss. Thirty-one died, seven when the Mossamedes capsized and 24 others who were in a lifeboat that sank. The 206 survivors were picked up by the French gunboat Cassiopee, the Portuguese gunboat Salvador Correia and by fishing vessels from Porto Alexandre in Angola.

Maschyagandhi (United Kingdom) The barque foundered in the Bay of Bengal. Her crew survived.
Teja (Chile) The cargo ship struck rocks off Punta de Lobos and sank.

Wedding of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) in Westminster Abbey. She begins a royal tradition by laying her bouquet at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in memory of her brother Fergus.


Ship Losses:

Brush (United States) The cargo ship ran aground at the South Cape Arago Lighthouse, Oregon. Her crew were rescued by a United States Coast Guard ship.
