To be honest, it's all about experimentation. I'm no Photoshop buff, I just added a few filters here and there, see what worked, tweaked the brightness/contrast and voila!

Here's a rough explanation of what I did:
  • First of all, Image > Adjustments > Desaturate;
  • Increased the brightness/contrast;
  • Added gaussian blur;
  • Duplicated the layer, added grain (vertical) - you need to experiment with the grain and see what works best;
  • Set the layer to overlay and merged with bottom layer - again, try different blending modes before merging;
  • Created a new transparent layer;
  • Rendered clouds, followed by difference clouds;
  • Set the transparency of the layer to +-50%, merged with bottom layer;
  • Created new layer, Filter > Render > Fibres. Experiment with Variance and Strength;
  • Set the blending mode to Soft Light, transparency of layer +- 50%, merged with bottom layer;
  • You can add some Film Grain if you want to;
  • Add some spots, black or white to the image with the brush for the final touch (grunge brushes works the best, you'll have to google for them though);
The result:

See what you're getting at. Constructive criticism?
The pic is too 'grey' and has no detail or subject, lines are too noticable.
Instead of simply binning the colour with "Desaturate", add a 'Channel Mixer' layer and tick the Greyscale box then move the sliders up & down - gives much more control.

My near-collision with a victim. Emergency back and full left rudder saved me from explaining to the Cmdr of the training flotilla why his best pupil collided with a target ship! (This was the final exam).

SH3 backgrounds
Depthcharge damage on a VIIc u-boat & minefield

Made specially as a nice desktop image for myself and anyone elso who has an interest in subsims.
There is an SH3 screenshot under there somewhere... as you may have noticed there is some postwork

The texture came with a mod (GW i think) so i dont know its original author- sorry.
I added a few dents to the model to simulate damage from depthcharges.

Thats nice! However it looks nothing like my SHIII, the bubbles from the propeller on your pic are corkscrewing like you'd expect, however mine appears as just a "cloud" - why do you think that is?

dont worry theres nothing wrong with your sh3, these pics have sooo much stuff added on top of the original image there barely recognisable as sh3, all the particles were replaced, the lighting redone and some funky volumetric light rays added.
