Default Quick question about SCU

I found me a copy of Sub Command and it's awesome

I installed SCXII and SCU and everything works, but I'm a little worried about -how- SCU works. The instructions talk a lot about the SCU.exe patching this and modifying that, I'm just wondering if it overwrites any characteristics of the stock three subs, such that I would have to "change back" or uninstall to make them behave properly? It's not really clear and the inclusion of the seemingly redundant Akula II selection in SubChanger makes me wonder. I'd hate to start the Russian campaign and find my Akula has stats of a November!

No need to worry, SCX does not affect the stock platforms. Once you select a SCU sub using the changer utility, you then have to create (or edit) a mission or campaign in the editor to include your chosen sub as playable - the stock subs are untouched.

If I remember correctly the installation program copies over the datastructure of a stock playable submarine into a new playable unit data-structure. Then the subchanger utility fill it with the correct characteristic data of the desired subtype. So the stock subs themselves are untouched.

Thanks for the answers, that's a load off my mind. Now if I could just figure out how to detect anything. I was playing Arctic Hide and Seek and after 8 in game hours of nothing I finally gave up and used Truth. I got to within 1000 yards of the Typhoon and still nothing on sonar. Does SCXIIc nerf the sonar that badly or is there some trick to searching under ice? Also is the Supertanker escort mission horribly broken? I start it and 2 minutes in every time UR TANKER ASPLODE. Best I can tell she's running herself aground.

I suspect the tanker mission is a stock mission, and not designed with SCX2 in mind. Therefore whoever is firing at those tankers might be to near them, in relation to their sensor (increased ) sensitivity. You can find more missions designed specifically for SCX2 on Bill Nicholls' (Subguru) site: www.subguru.com

As for artic hide and see I am not sure what could cause you to be deaf. Is your towed array broken perhaps? Or is it hiding in one of your sensor's deaf-zones. If it is slow it is very quiet. But you may also have to adjust the intensity or gamma settings of your monitor/grahics card to enhance the display of the faintest narrowband signals. One of the missions on subguru's site had a screenshot of the narrowband in it which you can use as a test-image. Unfortunately I can't remember who made it or what it was named.

[EDIT] It's in here: http://www.subguru.com/missions/SCHQ_TACMAN_PDF.zip
