Default Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB

MATCHPLAY & OIL ON THE FIRE

Here are the first two PlayersDB scenarios for the upcoming Harpoon3: Advanced Naval Warfare simulator. The game hasn't been released, yet, but Freek Schepers has been busily testing the Beta version and feels that these two scenarios are ready to go in case there are any other Beta-testers out there who are bored with testing the same old scenarios and would like to try some new material.

MATCHPLAY

Terrorist attacks on the Belgium Royal family have left the Dutch Crown Prince next in line to the throne of Belgium. Popular mourning and an uprising has quickly resulted into civil war between the French-speaking Walloons in southern Belgium and the Dutch-speaking Flemish in northern Belgium.

Holland has quickly moved ground forces into Belgium to assert its claim to the throne, while France has tried unsuccessfully to mobilise the UN. But as the Israelis showed in 1967, the UN cannot operate at the pace of modern warfare...

OIL ON THE FIRE

It started when the Swedish Euro Vote failed the second time. Denmark followed. Finland pledged to stay out of NATO. Norway left NATO, the EU grew eastward and crumbled northward. Having received much praise for their social and peaceful policies, the Dutch and Norwegian economies have floated for years on bubbles of gas and oil, North Sea Oil. Nicely divided up by treaty when oil was plentiful, the Norwegian and Dutch oil companies, StatOil and Shell, respectively, co-operated to make a killing.

However, the traditional fields ran out at a time of high oil prices. Shell and StatOil discovered a rich new field right underneath the demarcation line between both countries' claims. An ownership fight ensued. The Dutch and Norwegian governments talked and talked until the Dutch elections. The Netherlands elected radicals that would look after their future even at the cost of others. Talk soon stopped and ships sailed with orders "to send a message".

These scenarios require the PlayersDB [MatchPlay] and PlayersDB [Oil on the Fire], respectively, that have been included in their respective *.zip files. Do not attempt to play these scenarios with other versions of the PlayersDB.

Default Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB

Battle of Britain II

Here’s one more PlayersDB scenario for the upcoming Harpoon3: Advanced Naval Warfare simulator.

Battle of Britain II

Holland has moved ground forces into Belgium and defeated French attempts to interfere. The Charles de Gaulle has been sunk and the French air force is licking its wounds.

The UN has authorised all members to take steps to reverse this situation and the UK has taken up the call of duty.

Author: Freek Schepers

This scenario requires the PlayersDB [Battle of Britain] that has been included in the *.zip file. Do not attempt to play this scenario with other versions of the PlayersDB.

Default Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB

Power Sweep & Beach Reconnaissance

Here are two more PlayersDB scenarios that have been tested and found to be fully compatible with the Harpoon3: ANW engine. We are in the process of testing each and every PlayersDB scenario in order to ensure complete compatibility. There have been many changes in the game engine. Some behaviour and modelling that was operational in Harpoon 3.6.3 may either be non-functional in ANW or behave in a significantly different manner. One such item is the new mine warfare model that was recently introduced to the PlayersDB. For reasons such as this, we will be extensively and exhaustively testing pre-existing PlayersDB scenarios and not rating them as ANW compatible until we are certain of it.
Players are advised that only the PlayersDB scenarios specifically declared to be compatible with ANW have been tested by their authors. While most users will find no major issues playing PlayersDB Harpoon 3.6.3 scenarios with the new ANW engine, there have been sporadic reports of crashes and other problematic behaviour when switching to the new engine that did not occur in the older 3.6.3 engine.
We thank you for your patience in this matter and hope to get all PlayersDB scenarios tested and fully compatible with ANW as soon as possible.

Beach Reconnaissance

Soviet submarines have scored many successes in the Atlantic convoy lanes through the profligate expenditure of torpedoes and missiles. By the third week of the war, many submarines are suspected to be low on fuel and munitions. However, the number of submarines returning to ports in the Kola Peninsula is far lower than expected.

The level of subsurface activity in the Spitzbergen area is higher than expected. Investigate and see if these anomalies are coincidental or correlated. If the Soviets can replenish away from the Kola Peninsula, this would be a significant and strategic force multiplier.

Author: Herman Hum

Power Sweep

The war has not been kind to the Soviet navy; especially their submarine forces. In order to protect their remaining submarine units, the Soviets have been forced to begin escorting their less capable boats with first-line SSNs.

In this engagement, a Soviet SSN is guarding two other units as they proceed south through the Norwegian Sea. Once the group has reached the Atlantic, the SSN will perform its own mission while the SS and SSGN attack surface shipping.

First, though, NATO will try to stop them.

Author: Dave Steinmeyer

These scenarios require the PlayersDB that has been included in their respective *.zip files. Do not attempt to play these scenarios with other versions of the PlayersDB.

I've been a Harppon player since i copied it off a customers compuer in the early 90's. I love Harpoon Gold, but have never really got into H3. I tried Harpoon 2 (on 3 floppy disks way back when) but found it to complicated. Does H3 have a steep learning curve?

It's the same as H2 but able to run without crashing on modern machines. The work involved between H2 and H3 is all backend work.
H3 comes with a good tutorial that teaches the important stuff. I have both and play both. You can get a demo.

Sorry, the H3 demo version for the PC is no longer available at AGSI. I just checked and they took down their PC Download page.

The learning required is definitely high, as with any complex game. However, you can probably get started very quickly after going through the tutorial sessions. You might get hammered, but nothing teaches better than a Harpoon missile in the side of your ship!

I haven't played since the original Harpoon game, i'm tempted by this one.
Are you stuck using the toy-boat symbols on the map display or is there an option to use NATO standard symbols for the game displays?

Default H3 Multi-player Server up

Tony Eischens, HarpGamer.com Admin, has gratiously set up a server to help players who might be interested in Harpoon3 multi-player matches.

Port: 14345 - ANW DB 1.4 as shipped with H3 3.7.0.0

The server has been stable since I turned MPLogging off in the harpoon3.ini file. Occasionally the clients come unsynched and the clients crash but the server piece itself has been pretty stable.

The above image indicates whether there are any people at HarpGamer ready and willing to undertake a Multi-player mission. The games need not take place on the StratSims server, this can function as a general meeting place to set up MP games, and requires only a fairly recent web browser. Refreshing this page will in most cases indicate the current chat status.

Is what you will see if there are players chatting

Is what you will see when no players are chatting

Either way head over when you want to play!

If the server does appear to crash, chase me down at #harpgamer on the NewNetIRC network or e-mail me at sysop@tgp.net. There is a link to Java IRC client at HarpGamer.

If you want to see scenarios added/removed/swapped out please e-mail me the scenarios in a single zip file to sysop@tgp.net and I'll make the changes.

The connection isn't super fast, T-1 so if you all show up at once there could be issues. I'll leave the server up as long as cooling capacity and my interest holds out or I actually put the server into its planned service.

Hear ye, Hear ye!

There's going to be a war! All are invited.

XXup and I are planning to be on the server 3.5 hours from this point. That's 1600h MST. Do join us if you have a chance to help us send this server into the Harpoon sunset.

You can meet up with us either on the HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.

Default New Harpoon3: ANW scenario for the PlayersDB - Katyusha

The 33rd new scenario of the year! Another scenario straight from the headlines!

Katyusha

This scenario has been tested for compatibility with the Harpoon3: ANW simulator Beta patch v3.7.1

Syrian-backed Hezbollah is raining Katyusha rockets on Northern Israel. Israeli intelligence suggests that Hezbollah has over 10,000 such rockets flown in daily through Damascus from Tehran. Iran has an advanced missile program building anti-ship missiles and ground-attack missiles of various ranges and with ever-increasing accuracy. Katyusha is a terror weapon, but if Iran decides to supply Hezbollah with modern missiles and advanced guidance packages, then Israel is really in trouble. The Israeli government has decided that this threat warrants a pre-emptive strike on the missile manufacturing plants in Iran.

Author: Freek Schepers

This scenario requires the latest release of the PlayersDB v6.4.9

UNIFIL

The 34th new scenario of the year! Another scenario straight from the headlines!

This scenario has been tested for compatibility with Harpoon3 ANW v3.7.0

After a month-long war in Southern Lebanon which saw thousands dead and thousands of Katyusha rockets landing in Israel, the UN Security Council has accepted resolution 1702.

Israel's deep strike on Iranian WMD sites has done nothing to reduce the threat from Hezbollah. It's all up to UNIFIL, now.

The UN mandate is to:

1. Enforce a cease-fire in Lebanon
2. Disarm/destroy Hezbollah in Lebanon
3. Implement an arms embargo against Israel and Hezbollah
4. Prevent IDF missions into Lebanon

France and Italy (both with long heritage in the Middle East) are leading the coalition which, for the first time ever, contains Army, Navy, and Air Force elements.

This scenario requires the latest release of the PlayersDB v6.4.9

Default New Harpoon3: ANW scenario for the PlayersDB - Anti-Carrier Play

Anti-Carrier Play

Here’s one more PlayersDB scenario for the upcoming Harpoon3: Advanced Naval Warfare simulator.

Anti-Carrier Play

ROUND 2:

ANTI-CARRIER PLAY
Second in the MATCHPLAY battleset, playable from the Dutch side. To reinforce the French fleet, the Carrier Charles de Gaulle is moving from the Mediterranean to Brest. The UN has stopped all combat and your mission is to sink Charles de Gaulle using your remaining Dutch submarines

Special-Ops Play

Here’s one more PlayersDB scenario for the Harpoon3: Advanced Naval Warfare simulator.

Warning: This scenario will only play in the publicly released version ANW 3.7.0. Do NOT attempt to use the Beta Patch 3.7.1, otherwise, this scenario will NOT work.

ROUND 3:

Third of the MATCHPLAY battleset, playable from the Dutch side. The Netherlands has lost a lot of F-16s against France, but most pilots have bailed out over friendly territory and are fit to fly. Belgian F-16s, captured intact, are being readied for operations. Denmark also flies 62 F-16MLUs, based on two bases in Skrydstrup and Aalborg. A daring plan has been developed to raid the Danish airbase of Skrydstrup, neutralise the defences, bring in pilots and maintenance crews by plane, and fly the aircraft to Netherlands.
