Default Deciding question

Hey there, folks.

You never see me here, cos Im a SH3 skipper.

I decided to give SH4 a shot, even tho everybody down there (sh3 forums) say its plain crap.

I already have the game, and the UBM addon, cos I dont like playing as an american.

The only thing now that will decide whether Im playing or not, is this:

Do I have the option to play with german voices? The idea of me playing in an uboat with english voices would drive me mad, and I would not play the game, no way.

If the answer is positive, which ones are the best single mods, except for OM that Im already downloading? Is there a soundpack already? What about the eye-candy? What is a must? Do SH Commander works for SH4 aswell?

Thanks in advance for any help.

For Uboats, OM is all you need. It still has a few english voices but most are fine. Make sure you also get OMEGU and, if the interface drives you nuts, try the KiUB interface (download link in my sig). Best of luck.

Also Philipp Thomsen has done a soundpack and I converted DBSM for SH4. Both are available in the SubSim Downloads section.

There are a couple of other German sound mods for SH4 as well.

Are you guys telling me that the uboat missions addon doesnt come with german voices?

Jesus Crist, whatta hell was ubisoft thinking? This is ridiculous.

Did anyone tried to make all sh3 german voices and sounds work with sh4?

Does sh4 have new decent sound effects too? Sound is, for me, the most important part for immersion.

Also, did anybody transformed the sh4 gui more like the sh3 gui? I didnt like the sh4 gui.

I will take a look at what you said, Karamazov!

For German crew voices - I prefer Spaxs SH4 Uboat Speech Fix V8
http://www.filefront.com/13873487/Sp...PEECH_FI8.zip/

You may also wish to try German Map labels
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=1372

And for tower emblems try
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...16&postcount=1

Happy hunting!

Not paying attention, I told you that you had done a soundpack!

But no, stock SH4 does not have the option SH3 had to switch voices. They obviously didn't plan to do the UBM originally, and didn't put the choice in when they did it.

Akula is right - Spax's voice change gives you sort-of stock SH3 voices for SH4.

Welcome to SH4 Philipp.

Crap? SH4 with OM / OMEGU is every bit as good as GWX IMHO.

That's a pity, because if you did you'd soon find that SH4 with RFB / RSRDC is again every bit as good as GWX But each to their own of course.

As for me, I used to be an avid GWX Kaleun until I found both SH4 and the UBM addon in a bargain bin while shopping for groceries The stock game leaves a lot to be desired, true, but installing a realism-oriented supermod (or 3) of your choice takes care of all that and more. And as an added bonus you'll get nicer graphics and a vastly improved crew management system too! Y'know, there probably _was_ a reason for the GWX crew switching over to SH4 before they called it quits...

But anyway, a warm welcome to you Herr Kaleun Thomsen! May you find your foray into these uncharted waters a lucky one

Uhhh that's a bit dramatic and sure much exaggerated

Many people find that SH3 with the current status of modification has reached a fantastic level, and that SH4 Uboat Mission has many shortcomings and a much smaller modding community (Unlike the original SH4, which is being brought to shine aomng others by Ducimus and the RFB team )

But saying that is plainly crap is only what some louder ones say, not what the majority of us think. With OMonsoon, OMEGU, and the amazing interface by Karamazov, SH4 uboats has become already a very serious product, and has not much to envy SH3 -plus fantastic graphics!

I understand what you say, Hitman, and I agree.

Its just that I heard so many bad comments already, and lots of people saying they tried sh4 and went back to sh3, even with nowday's mods and supermods, and I feel uncertain. But like I said many times before, I wont judge a book without first reading it from cover to cover.

Just tell me something I forgot to ask. In sh4 ubm, there is already a FULL atlantic campaign? Starting from Wilhelmshaven or Kiel in 1939? All patrol grids in atlantic and around the British islands? AM, AN, BE, BF and all? I dont want to take my IXB zillions of miles to the coast of india to help japanese, I want my atlantic campaign, just like sh3. Is this possible already, or nobody have worked in this area for the supermods?

And regarding number of ships of different nations, do we have already a large number of vessels from different nations like sh3, or its pretty limited to the japanese area?

Sorry for the many questions, but I dont know squat about sh4.

If somebody is interested, I can convert my sh3 soundpack v3 to sh4, with a few upgrades I have done along the years. I actually dont know if someone had already tried my soundpack with sh4, and I dont know if it works, or if someone made it work.

Plus, stock/modded sh3 always had that annoying bug of ships behaving like sports cars, dodging torpedoes and reducing/accelerating in a matter of seconds. I fixed that with a mod for sh3. How is sh4 in this department?

you should try the EAX sound sim for SH4, it's far superior to
anything you will hear in SH3 because it has a real simulation
of sounds at different distances.

Thomsen, really, it's faster to just plug in OM, start a campaign in 39 with a type VII and tell us how your first patrol went. Ships? You're in for a very nice surprise. By the way, the brits have planes now even in 39 but their aim is pretty poor so I suggest you flank and let the AA crew do it's magic. And I subscribe to what the others just said about the American campaign. Start a campaign in one of the asian fleets with an S18 in TMO or RFB. When those landing parties will fill up the horizon and your eels will refuse to detonate and you'll have 5+ DDs on top of you, you'll wonder why you haven't tried this game until now.

I consider the American side of the game to be just as good as the full modded SH3, as long as you get used to the Position Keeper. The german side has always been plagued by hard-coded shortcuts. Indeed the UBM was just an afterthought from the Ubi suits. So don't judge it too much by GWX standards. On the contrary, enjoy some of the differences. Such as magnetic eels that actually work , escorts that miss you, ships that fail to spot you head on at night at 2000m, planes that spot you at up to 30 meters below and so on.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Extremely helpful.

I will just install everything and give it a go.

The only thing Im sure Ill have a trouble at first, is the gui, the overal buttons linking to different views and map and positions on the sub. Really, its the total opposite to sh3, for what I have seen. I dont know if I should search for a mod that changes the gui to something like sh3, or if I should just get used to the sh4 gui.

Anyway, I will follow your recomendations and give it a go.

By the way, I saw long ago a mod that was called something like "Environment 5.0", or something like it, and it had some beautiful screenshots of clouds and sunsets and water colours. Is something like this already in OM, or should I download an environment mod apart?

OMEGU has without doubt the most realistic waves seen so far as it includes the Real Environment. Too bad the game physics don't allow the sub to react accordingly. But still, being hit by 10 meter waves is a sight to behold. As for the interface, it's not that the game uses the Notepad... it's how it uses it. Unlike in SH3 where you could send individual values, here it sends default values of 3000m range and 0 speed . And there's no ship length in the recognition manual. And the stadimeter sometimes refuses to lock on ships. I did my best to mod it for the last 3 months and it was a pain in the proverbial butt because of the different resolutions and hardcoded items. The commands in OM are based on stock SH4 keys. Why they changed them since SH3 I have no clue but it takes about an hour to change back the most important keys.

But when I mean gui, I mean THIS:

Im lost with this gui. I dont know where to click. SH3 had the gui commands divided into cathegories, like something related to the sonar, should be under the sonarman button. It was intuitive. In sh4, I dont know where the hell should I click, its not intuitive.

Someone already made a gui somewhat more like sh3?

I swear this is the only thing bothering me in sh4.

Maybe I dont know what Im saying, and this sh4 gui is actually better...

the top row icons basically replaces the officer icons,
that's all.
btw you can edit the tga and replace the symbols again
with officer pics. even more than sh3.
