I heard the same, with a difference in reason.
what i heard was that the weathering was a combo of
-bad paint
-bad application of paint ( humidity from the air preventing proper application of paint )
- maintenance conditions and air humidity preventing proper correction of scratched, damaged paint

Developed during ww2 but came just little bit too late to see action....hope its not a cheat in this thread
Skyrider sums up all the experience gained for piston powered attack aircraft.That may be the reason why it has served successfully from 40s till 80s in its role as attack aircraft.
