Welcome!
Not saving a great game is a toss of the dice worthy of respect, but sadly you rolled snake eyes... Sorta like real world submarining.

I prefer the "save before every significant event" style of play so I can develop more effective in-game tactics... There is definitely more than one way to skin a barracuda and improving approaches and exits has proven a fertile field for learning and minimizing burn out on the game.

The good news may be that at least you didn't misjudge your fuel to run dry five miles from home port. I had a friend that has done that... yeah, that's the ticket... a friend did it...

Yes, I know that pain too. I've done this in my favourite SH3 GWX 3.0... And was certain that after running out of fuel I will just send a message and they will send something to refuel her Ehh, you have no Idea what I've came through to save this boat in SH4... But now I can't sail back to port... I tried to change some save file lines, but It doesn't work... So I'm dead at sea, I guess. Thank you all for your advices anyway...

Welcome aboard Pri3n47.

For your original question, editing saves. The save files are so in depth that trying to change them to correct an error will most likely cause damage to the entire game. Better to take it as a learning experience and start another career. Best to save at base, then regular intervals while on patrol in a new file each time. After too many overwrites, the save files will get corrupted.

No need to restart if you're willing to work around it. Save the game as is, including the replay. Then load the replay, starting at whichever point you wish, and hit the play button, which should allow you to continue the game at that pre-damage point. Your daylight correlation with local time may be lost, but it's just an annoyance for that one patrol.

You can look and see, your prop may be gone, lol. Stock game has a terrible damage model in some ways.

Yes. Ubi should implement into the game any rescue options for such cases, like friendly ship sailing to your position or anything really...
