Berlin reports that they have now 37 schools "coronadized". Regulations for schools differ from state to state, in Berlin pupils must wera masks on the backyard and in the corridors - but not in the classrooms during lessons. That makes so much sense. In my own state, Northrhine Westphalia, they must wear masks even during classes.

German health offices also say they are unable to keep even close track of holiday retuners and cannot minitor the obligation beign followed to be tested on the airport on arrival.

Croatia'S govenrment admitted that they knew they were pushign infections upwards, but accepted that in a bid to boost their tourism economy. The problem i have with that is that they did not just acept it for their own population - but ours as well. Thak you. I take it that it is like this in the other tourism coutnries, too: get the moeny from tourism, and do not worry about tourists exporting the pandemic back to their countries.

Germany should have done like Belgium: simply banning holiday travels beyond the border. Its not a coup d'etat. Its a pandemic.

Spanish Health Minister Fernando Simón warned: "Let there be no mistake, things are not going well". For the past two days Spain has counted more than 3,000 new cases. The big concern right now is young people: "I understand people want to party, but there are ways of doing it," Mr Simón said.

France has seen an even more dramatic rise in cases - 4,771 infections and 35 new clusters in 24 hours - and Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer says when schools go back in two weeks, pupils aged over 11 will have to wear face-coverings. Nursery teachers will also be asked to wear them.

In Italy, where cases are rising sharply too, the National Institute of Health says the median age for infections in the past week is as low as 30. The R rate of transmission is still below 1 but officials are warning that cases have been seen in all areas of Italy.

Lithuania has made the wearing of masks compulsory at all events, indoors and out, and also at all catering establishments.

While UK travellers to Croatia are having to return by 04:00 BST (03:00 GMT) on Saturday or face 14 days of quarantine, Germany has placed two Croatian regions on its "red list", and neighbouring Slovenia has given travellers to Croatia until Monday to come back if they want to avoid quarantine.

A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to six weeks in jail after breaking quarantine rules, the New Zealand Herald reports. Earlier this month, Jesse Courtney Welsh went into an isolation facility in Auckland to visit a friend who was quarantining after returning from Australia. This was already a breach, but then Welsh, in the words of the judge, made "matters worse" by hugging his friend.

The number of coronavirus cases in Scotland has risen by 83 in the last 24 hours. A total of 19,811 people have now tested positive for Covid-19. No deaths linked to the virus were registered since Saturday so the total remains at 2,492.

Several politicians in Germany are calling for a temporary ban on private parties after the country saw its highest rise in new infections since late April. On Saturday the Robert Koch Institute reported 2,034 new confirmed cases, taking the total up to 232,082.

Italy's health minister has said there will be no second lockdown in the country, despite the number of new daily cases rising above 1,000 for the first time since restrictions were eased in May.

US Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has said that if he were elected in November he would be willing to shut down the country again to control the spread of the virus, if scientists recommended it. "I would shut it down, I would listen to the scientists," he said, adding that he would "be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives, because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus". President Donald Trump - his rival for the 3 November election - responded by tweeting that Biden "has no clue!"

Pakistan has recorded its lowest number of daily deaths since March, the Associated Press news agency reports. On Sunday, the country's National Command and Control Center said there had been four deaths and 591 new infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to more than 292,000, with 6,235 fatalities.

At least 13 people have died in a stampede at a nightclub in the Peruvian capital, Lima, after it was raided by police for breaking coronavirus rules.

The US Food and Drug Administration gives emergency authorisation for the use of plasma to treat coronavirus patients.

South Korea tightens social distancing requirements as daily new cases continue to rise.

France and Italy record their highest numbers of daily cases since May.

Much of the continent is facing a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. France reported its highest daily figure since May on Sunday, and its health minister said the majority of these new cases were circulating among the under-40s

Germany, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic also recorded major daily increases over the weekend.

In Germany, politicians are calling for a temporary ban on private parties to combat the rise. "Since the start of summer a certain recklessness has spread," Ralph Brinkhaus, the leader of the CDU/CSU conservative parliamentary bloc, said.

And in Italy, Sicily's governor said he wanted to close migrant centres on the island. He alleged they were hotspots for Covid-19 transmission, but the Italian government in Rome said he did not have the authority to close them.

Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has tested positive for the virus and is in a serious condition in hospital, a spokeswoman said. She served as PM twice and ran for president in 2010 and 2014

Rwanda recorded 200 cases on Sunday - the highest number in a single day since it reported its first case in March. The country now has more than 3,000 cases of the virus, with almost 1,000 of them recorded in the last two weeks.

South Africa's students in all grades resume classes today, after weeks of closure because of the pandemic. President Cyril Ramaphosa closed the schools in July after they were briefly reopened, following a public outcry on rising virus cases.

Nigeria's economy has shrunk by 6.1% in the second quarter of 2020, due to lockdowns decreasing business activity at home and abroad. The coronavirus death toll in the country has passed 1,000

A man in Hong Kong has become the first confirmed patient to be infected with the coronavirus a second time, according to researchers at the University of Hong Kong.
The new finding suggests that some patients who recover from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, may have only short-lived immunity from reinfection. The case will likely also be significant for scientists who have been working on treatments using antibodies from recovered coronavirus patients, and those who have been scrambling to develop a safe and effective vaccine.

Not the first time reinfection possibilities have been claimed, but this time the evidence seems to be ebyond any remaining doubt. Bad, bad news, because the time when immunity is given seems to be very shortlived only. And for developing vaccines, this is even worse news, I think.
