Internet connection problems!

Some of you may have noticed that I have been absent lately, I have an intermittent connection problem that is working with full speed for a half hour or so then cuts off totally for anything between 5 minutes to an hour before coming back on, so it is all on or nothing, I checked with my ISP and they assure me that it is either a line or equipment fault, they will lodge a complaint with the line company but if it turns out to be a fault on my premises then I will be charged with the call out fees etc so I haven't made the call!
What is the probability of this type of fault being the router, about the only way that I can see is to replace it, I could just do a search on eBay for a cheapie I suppose! When it drops out the phone operates without a hitch, maybe it is the router, don't think it would be the filter!
Advice, as always, is welcome!

Fixed connection, I am used to poor connections here in the country but not to this extent, gets rather frustrating!

I will guess,at the rate of speed is "fairly" low as you describe, and the server in the region, could have some prob. But the switch or router have also a finger in to the soup
