Windows 10: What You Need to Know

I'm running SH3 and SH4 just fine, no problems. I didn't have to reinstall either one.

I don't play the others.

Well I have had Windows 10 a couple of days. In fact I prefer it over 8.1 in that it has done away with the Metro layout, unless you decide to use tablet mode which on a PC or Laptop is pointless. I like that the start menu is back and more or less resembles Windows 7. I don't know why some people are complaining about the phone icons. I removed most from my start menu.

I also only use a local account not an MS one as I don't want to be connected to the cloud and I don't trust MS not to be sniffing at what I do regardless of how much I have turned off.

None of my games work.

Dangerous Waters doesn't work, Medieval 2 Total War doesn't work. Well they load but I get no graphics and can hear the music.

Battlezone which ran fine under Windows 8.1 just doesn't run at all. Apart from that I like it.

Try reinstalling the games, I had to do that for total war attila.

Have you tried right click, and troubleshoot compatibility?

Win10 is off the hook mucking my friends PC up it has come to light he fell for a email scam claiming to be from Microsoft. Well he has got his Win7 back up and running and sticking with it. Hope he has learn his lesson.



BTW: Is it true Win10 is loaded with back door spyware?

Just something I heard about but without proof I feel this could be scaremongering.

Scaremongering. The main thing is to use a local account if you want to be sure of not sending stuff back to microsoft. I have and I have also turned off as much feedback and info sharing as is possible.

No, I'm afraid if you're scaremongering you also happen to be right. I prescribe some time so we can analyze just what this Windows 10 beast really is. So far many things look bad.

Here's the state of Windows privacy from Vonnie, a guy whose opinion I respect a lot. Without losing his composure and just flaming Microsoft unmercifully (which is what I think they deserve but that does nothing in the cause of education) Vonnie goes option by option and reveals the danger of each privacy invading "feature." Mind you, these are all enabled by default--no opt in here.

He doesn't say so, but I think it's fairly clear that Microsoft has turned an operating system into Facebook. I'm opting out of the upgrade for at least six months to see if Microsoft will buy a vowel and decide to respect its customers. If they don't I'm looking for alternatives.

The other disturbing trend is that when you are "upgrading" Windows 10 pays no attention to your browser preferences. Microsoft Edge, which is a cell phone program from the operating system formerly known as Metro, automatically installs as your default browser, replacing Firefox, Chrome or any other browser you might prefer.

You might say "no problem, I can fix that." But Microsoft, much in the same way they introduced trial and terror into setting your machine to boot into the BIOS and let you boot from a CD/DVD by making you select options that NOBODY can possibly understand without the courage to click on unfathomable and never before encountered acronyms, has a browser selection procedure where in order to select Chrome, for instance, you must select Edge to get the selection menu. This violates all concepts, both formal and informal, about how computers should present options, using an option not to enable you to select what you want, but to intimidate you into not selecting the option which will allow you do perform what you wish to accomplish.

To say that is troubling is an understatement. Threre are at least two types of companies, but I'll just use two categories here:

those who respect their customers (spelled with a capital C) and see their mission as helping Customers accomplish their goals in an honest and straightforward manner. Republic Wireless and Horizon Hobby are conspicuous examples. They believe legitimate profits come from serving customers.

Those who see their customers as dupes who must be tricked into spending as much money as possible, involuntarily and without consent when possible, to prey upon people who are fooled into thinking their product is "cool," "trendy," and "necessary." Cable, cellular telephone companies and giant monster mega-banks are foremost on this list and I'm afraid Microsoft is jumping into the category with gusto.

The doctor prescribes at least six months evaluation before adopting Windows 10 and then only if Microsoft realizes that legitimate profits come from providing desired services from people who deserve your trust and respect and whose trust and respect it is your mission to acquire through willing service. Otherwise it's time to cross them off the list of possible companies to do business with.

In total it gone through a crashed HDD and a failing PSU before a few months ago it simply refused to boot up. I would recon a good 7-8 years of service.

PSU about $30. Hard drive probably scrambled by PSU failure while writing to hard drive. Probability hard drive is really bad is less than 20%. If it is you can replace it for about $50. Then you would be good as new.

What's that new computer cost? Unless you unhappy with how it ran when it was working I don't think it's appropriate to buy a new computer with a completely untried operating system. You'd be a beta tester with no compensation.

And there's the privacy aspect of Windows 10. As you can see above, what we know so far is not encouraging. While Microsoft is "protecting us" with UEFI (keeping alternative operating systems from easily dual booting or replacing Windows), they are not protecting our privacy and in fact are looking at our private information as the piggy bank that finances their operation. This is not cool. Profits should not come from treating your customers as prey. I'm not willing to tolerate that.

Finally, a review of Windows 10 not written by a bought and paid for reviewer. You know who they are....

Conclusion: for those not having previous experience and for those whose only experience is the Windows 8 family, this looks like a good upgrade if...... For those migrating from Windows 7, run away--it's NOT an upgrade for you. For all, whether they are recommended to install or not to install, watch carefully for news as news continues to emerge as to how Microsoft is treating you as a victim instead of a customer who commands respect. They do not have your back except for the opportunity to stick a knife in it. If you're very good at OS-fu you might be able to live with that. But the jury is very out and the pioneers get all the arrows.
