Default FaT Torpedos

Can anybody clarify the FaT torpedo for me?

On the TDC screen, there is a RANGE setting.

When you have a FaT torpedo in a tube, there is a green FaT button which, if clicked, reveals other settings, one of which is STRAIGHT RUN setting.

I've done searches thru this forum, and I have not found out how RANGE and STRAIGHT RUN impact a FaT torpedo.

Does one even bother with RANGE if STRAIGHT RUN is available?

I've tried playing with the settings, and I don't understand how RANGE impacts the torpedo's planned track, in words.

Can anybody explain what is the difference between RANGE and STRAIGHT RUN for the FaT torpedo?

I think you can adjust the straight run distance before the torp will make the first turn...this way, the torp can pass through all convoy and then turn for a second pass.

"The torpedo could be programmed to run in a straight line for a certain distance, then if a hit did not occur, the torpedo would reverse course turning right or left (as programmed) and ran for a further 800 or 1,600 meters before reversing course again."

BTW if you open your torpedo attack map (not the navigation map but the other where you have all the torpedo settings available to you) you can see the torpedoes expected track so you can understand much better what each setting does.

It's an excellent weapon for later years when attacking an escorted convoy from around around 2000 m is suicidal. If your solution is at least within the ballpark you're bound to score a hit.

Presuming you are playing the GWX 3 mod (since it is the most popular one) the manual has a torpedo description starting on page 109, and a fine image describing the path on page 110. And the LuT on page 112.
