FOTRSU or TMO?
Now that I’ve gotten my feet wet with FOTRSU, I keep hearing references to TMO. Can I ask what the relative strengths and weaknesses of each are?

here is a brief synopsis but you need to read the authors' description to get the full flavor of the mods. FOTRUS - Fall of the Rising Sun - Ultimate Version is the combination of previous versions, some of which were no longer available on Subsim. it is the workchild of several teammates and includes many extra features such as a Tench Class Boat in 1945 and a lot of eye candy. https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=243064 TMO - Trigger Maru Overhauled was the work of Ducimus and it created a tougher enemy environment for the US Pacific theatre. https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132330 personally, i've played both and enjoyed both.

Thanks!
So, if I want "ease of use with upgraded game gfx and operability" I go FOTRSU, and if I want "dead real, with an emphasis on dead" I go TMO? |

Tried TMO. Good lord that’s a difficulty bump. I went from attacking surface task forces and steaming away effortlessly in Time Compression in FOTRSU with only the occasional torpedo malfunction - unless I somehow “acci-surfaced” during rough seas, at which point, wouldn’t you know that battleship guns work - to watching my Mk14s dud or blow up short or long of the target and then desperately evading escorts...and losing.
My only real question is: is there a way to take the beautiful eye candy from FOTRSU and drop it into TMO? The flames, the smoke, the impact flashes...maybe some of the water and weather? For that matter, which mods make all those beautiful screenies, and can I run them with TMO? My game still looks like 2007 |

I had tried TMO and also found it harder than I wanted to play.
There is (or perhaps WAS) TMOwtw. TMO with training wheels. I played that for quite a while, until I went to FOTRSU.

IMHO, I'd stick with FotRSU until you really feel competent in skippering a sub. There's enough variables in the sim to make it very difficult.
As others have mentioned, TMO is a major bump in difficulty. AI is very intelligent! I played with it for a while until I accepted the fact it was outside my skill set. Sims that are so difficult to play aren't much fun! FWIW......

I enjoy eye candy as much as the next guy.. But,,, if sinking ships and surviving is a direct result of one version of the game being easier than the other,, I think I'll try the challenge. Hopefully in a future version the enemy AI will be bumped up. Last edited by 4H_Ccrashh; 08-13-20 at 07:28 PM. |

Love FOTRS but it's still a work in progress, still resolving bugs and things, great mod though. TMO was left basically complete when Ducimus retired. Downside it hasnt been updated in years. Limited number of ships, planes etc. Missing some things then has things FOTRS does not. For example, the APR-1 Radar Warning Receiver for US subs in TMO. I recall ducimus adding this at my suggestion few years back, really key piece of equipment to have in the sim as in real life. Escorts in FOTRS are too easy for me at this time, other than them being able to detect radar(which i must say I do not like. Maybe capital ships having it since Yamato etc did have this, some top line fleet DD's like Akizuki did but average escort did not) so I run TMO for challenge with my modifications of course
Gato and Balao class have the 3D TDC and Radar mod included, this is a must mod. Very cool to see the 3D TDC work but also the radar mod, really allows for accurate radar tracking and firing solutions as US subs really did. TMO's AI is tough but not unbeatable. The problem is the depth charges a unrealistically strong. I have modified them, will release mod soon. I also created mods to modify enemy radar to reflect the japanese lack of quality radar. Still works and makes it tough, but not superman mode. I also have a shipack for TMO to release which adds numerous ships and planes, since sinking same ships over and gets old., now have a variety. Also added traffic and adjusted composition to be more reflective of reality depending on the time. Also, just finished giving escorts and DD's better sensors in early war so not so incompetent but also typical escort doesnt have the capability of say escorts in mid 44-end of war. Both mods are excellent, try them both see which best fits you. |

I will upload my depth charge mod soon. The AI is not the problem in TMO, its the depth charges are super powered . I have modified them to be effective(esp later war) but to offer less killing blows(which was rare) but to where the cumulative effects of damage adds up during a depth charging. |
