Looking for US WW2 sub movie...
Wife was quite a fan of "Das Boot" (original, 293 minute version). I understand there is no US equiv in quality or scope, but I wondered if there was anything out there that at least entertained and was reasonably accurate.
"Destination Tokyo", which we have because it's a Cary Grant film (she's a huge fan) is, of course, utterly ridiculous - but an amusing 'guilty pleasure', as it's SO over-the-top (it was basically a middle-of-the-war-BUY-WAR-BONDS-PLEASE propaganda movie - "They don’t understand the love we have for our women – they don’t even have a word for it in their language." still gets a chuckle out of my wife and I). Anyway, I see three candidates: - Up, Periscope (I read and liked the book as a kid) - Run Silent, Run Deep (tried reading this book at the same time, never finished it. Hmm...still have it...maybe I should...) - The Enemy Below Which, of those, would be best choice? Or, alternatively, what am I missing that would be a better choice? |

I know i'll get flamed for posting this but U-571 is about US submariners though operating from a u-boat.:rotfl:
Let's petition to Hollywood: Make some REAL US WWII subs movie in the pacific. Tough luck they would rather make more Spiderman movies. It's cheaper with the computer effect images.

I'm especially fond of "Hellcats of the Navy", if only for who stars in it

I'd take The Enemy Below as first choice. The sub interior is a joke, but the acting is top-notch and the story is told from both sides. Lots of fun.

...picked up "Run Silent, Run Deep", along with "The Enemy Below" (I understand it was the basis for Trek's "Balance of Terror" which was a great episode Okay, okay, I did know about the movie first. Still, amusing tie-in.) Will see if this fits the bill! |
