I can only find reference to tankers being built on Tyneside in the 70s... was it a tanker?

I have no clue at all.
A civilian ship, being exported and armed right after this by another nation.. does not look like a tanker, but - no idea.

Sunderland built?

Yes and FYI there were other types than just tankers built but I do agree the majority were tankers.

Hmm only that comes close would be the Kharg, sold to Iran.. but it alrady had at least one gun, before delivery in the 1980ies

Spot on Kai but it was not fitted with the 76mm OTO Melara until 1993 having had the gun removed prior to delivery.

Interesting story, i also had another one but that was a tanker and built 1981, so .. god they really build a lot there

Only one yard open now with approximately 25 employees but have built in excess of 1,600 vessels in all.
