especially : either of two vaulted portions of the bony structure of the foot that impart elasticity to it.

I'd think the elasticity part is important.

Unlike the flag an actual rainbow has no clear color borders, but rather a smooth transition.

A rainbow also does have an infrared and an ultraviolett component, but of course we cannot see either.
