Has anyone seen this movie ? It's pretty bad actually. I was wondering if those hooks that the german destroyer was dragging through the water in order to damage the us sub, are purely fictional or not. Another thing that I;ve never thought about, is that the ballast tanks of a sub really get so much debris and dead fish and all other things inside them. There is a scene at one point, when three men of the crew get out in the water (did these Balao class boats really have floodable dive chamber fitted for outside divers ?),,,totally *******(d up movie.

Any oppinions ?

i read a report somewhere of british destroyers dragging chain loops along the sea bed trying to find a sub that was sat on the sea bed in shallow water (near scapa flow if i remember right)..only mention i've heard that might suggest something similar..:hmm:

That's something I read about too. Anyway...don;t lose your time in this movie (except if you want clear new images of a Balao).

I never understood why the movie's scriptwriters felt they had to set it in the Atlantic. Why not the Pacific? Make the American sub's German pursuers Japanese and their unexpected British passengers Australians.

Maybe they felt the grey gloomy Atlantic would give the movie a creepier atmosphere than the sun-dappled Pacific. Although the Pacific isn't always sunny.

I just saw this movie about a week ago, and I was wondering how safe would it be to fire a .45 in a submerged sub? or was that one of the many flaws?

Depends on who the bullet hits. Don't forget the kaluen in Das Boot was about to put a bullet in poor Johann with his Luger.

Wouldn't the bullet ricoshade around the sub though?

In Das Boot, I don't think that was a Luger... it looked more like a Walther P38 to me.
