I use to attack scapa flow all the time in SH3, except I do it from the east.
I would use storms to cover the approach, then when I pass the nets I submerge and sneak in.

But this time i'm gonna bring a sub with some mines and drop one whenever a destroyer comes at me.

Default west approach

and how dense is the minefield... you would have to cruise on the surface or be sunk probably by shallow set mines...

Following on the projected route, and during late 1939, I had no problems to cross this field twice. I wasn't even aware of a minefield at the time!! Too bad my torpedoes were not working

Yeah the idea of willingly cruising through a minefield is unnerving to say the least, but I think I will give it a try (right now) and see how well it goes.
I have attacked lots of harbors including Gibraltar (that was crazy)
so this "shouldn't" be to difficult.

I think one of the hardest ports to attack is Loch Ewe, and I got killed the only time I tried.

Good to know. I just got killed on my first patrol by an armed merchant .
One shot broke my bow planes and down I went, then slammed into the sea floor breaking the batteries and many other systems. That damn thing got a lucky shot on me.

I'm still kind of used to SH3
