WARSHIP CLOSING VERY FAST SHORT RANGE !1!1!1! (your tactics for DD's)

Hi all !
I want to start a new thread about escaping from destroyers.
Let's get started !

One DD isn't a problem for me (for you too i think). He will drop few bombs, ping few times and go away(if you are close to enemy's land, then it wil calling another DD's)
The real problem is when a two (or more) destroyers appears. One will drop depth charges and the second will inform the second about your new (if you will change of course) position.
What to do ?
The anserw shoudl be placed in this thread !

PS. If there is a thread like this, then sorry i didin't know.

Why do we need a new thread on this topic? We already have dozens...

Dive deep, slow, quiet, and weave.

Crash dive at full speed, and get to around 150-200m depth asap.
As the destroyer passes overhead keep speed up and turn left or right 'into the attack'. Then go silent running at 2 knots.

Everytime a DC explodes, max speed for 30-45 secs, then back to 2 knots.
Keep the attacker at a bearing of 0 or 180 to minimise your asdic signature.

THE SHOW MUST GO ooooOOOOOooonnn !!!

But what if i've got 120 m under keel ?
In the most of my patrols i've got this situation:
120 m under the keel
2 or 3 destroyers over my head
and the creepy noise of asdic ping in my ears...

What's the solution for that ?

There is none.
There are, ARE situations where there is no solution.
remember, 75% of the Submariners Got killed or sunk.

The game is not to attack a maximum.
The game is to survive at all!

1939: 100metres under keel before having fun with the tommies.
1940 - 42: 150metres.
1942 - 45: 200 metres.

during the entire war:

run silent!
2 kts can still be heard, try 1 kt!

run deep!
your sonarman should say "more than 300 metres, herr kaleun" before even thinking of playing with a convoy.
If he does not, do not play!

1941+
keep away (200 miles and more) from any british or other allied shore.

1942+
see warship, dive, sit still and listen.
warship closing directly on you, dive to safe depth 150+ meteres, listen.
do not surface until he is gone.

1943+
see plane, dive for at least two hours. avoid Bay of Biscay (cross quickly)
see warship, dive 150 metres immediately and listen. if he comes close, dive 200 and pray.

BUT BUT BUT... if my situation if 20 metres and 3DDs?

You will die.

Like 75% of the real ones back then.

That's true .....
But sometimes it's possible to sink DD shoting torpedo on bearning. Sometimes when i'm really tired of running away I go to the periscope depth and fire a fast magnetic torpedo with 4,5 m of depth. For target i choose destroyer waitng for his turn in depth charging.

Question :
How can i know that i was detected by asdic
if i hear pinging it means that i was detected ??

I have to disagree with this one point. If you wait for the depth charge to explode it may already be too late. Go to full speed when you can hear the destroyer's propellors accelerate for his attack run. Turn hard either way and change your depth by 20 meters. Keep your speed up until you hear the depth charges explode, then go back to silent speed.

Another thread on this? Well, okay, since it's already started.

Vanjast's reply (with Sailor Steve's proviso) is pretty much what I do. I'd also add that half the battle is before you fire your first torpedo - position yourself so that you can dive next to/below the sinking ship and it can mask your descent - or under the convoy so the destroyers can't chase you. Use the 'set speed' to run for 1kt rather than just using 1/5 speed. Judicious use of 'Bold' canisters for those who have them can give you almost enough time to get away on their own, without screening yourself against the depth charge explosions.

agree... a DD doing more than 11-13 kts cant hear a damn thing because of the water/engine/screw noise.
That is the Captains call to give it the beans and change location.

Trouble is when the enemy is not exactly above you AND has a buddy.
the Buddy will still listen. And he will hear you sometimes... more often than not.

The first DD will make an attack run on "your position" and the Buddy hears your fast Sub screws from a completely different direction of where you "should" be.

Or, if the DD is far far away and a lone DD on patrol, fast forward under water, and when he hears you he will go for 28-35 kts speed.

point your tail at him, and make sure he is at your exact 180,000000°.

Then shoot one or two fast Steam eels at magnetic depth.
When they are gone, drop down to 80-100 metres at full power and noise.

If the eel misses, you are way down already and have an easy time escaping.

Only andviseable in 39 and 40...

what about acoustics torpedo ?

do you used them ?
I play a month without pause but I usually start a new campain everyday (looking for best combination of mods) and I choose 1939 or 1940 for start so I never tried them

What do you think about this torpedo ?

You're right, just forgot to mention 'current situation'.
In the game (not sure how is was in RL) an attacker would approach slowly, then accelerate when it drops DCs (tries not to sink itself). I'm usually on the hydrophone monitoring all these guys, worming my way through the attacks.

MM44 , there is also a bit of computer (AI) logic to get accustomed to - as indicated by Steve. By adjusting your depth during an attack you generally foil the attack.

I usually wait for the dd to about 800 meters, and then shoot torpedo towards the dd .and usually the dd will be destroyed
