OT in the immediate context (re Conolly ahem) but posting this here before i forget (the age you know). Interesting to hear or read about human development, especially from the stone age on, took me decades to connect the dots.. this is a brilliant documentary about the first real empire builders in what they call "Iraq" today after it was split up after WW1, but was called Mesopotamia or Sumer six millenia ago.
B.t.w. Göbekli Tepe was even earlier ..

love those reconstructions.
I heard a few years ago that those statues and sculptures were not white marble as we see them in museums today, but indeed colourfully painted.

Yep. There's some videos on youtube? showing this. Makes sense really. There's lots of painted statues from Ancient Egypt.

Classical Academics are always very conservative - "protecting their turf" maybe

There's some beautiful statues in the Museum at Athens that were retrieved from the well that the Persians threw them down, when they burnt Athens to the ground. They've got lots of paint still on them, and the ladies statues still have their makeup on !!!!!

And of course there's the "Alexander Sarcophagus" at Istanbul with faded colours but when viewed in ultra violet light positively glows with vibrant colours.
