In Germany, hair salons are reopening from today, despite an increase in the rate of cases over the past seven days.

Germany will also increase restrictions on travellers from the French border region of Moselle after midnight after a number of cases involving coronavirus variants were discovered.

Large crowds of people were seen in the French capital over the weekend, despite the high rate of infection in the Paris region.

Norway’s capital Oslo is to tighten measures over an increase in cases involving the UK variant, with restaurants and non-essential shops to close.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis says his country may use Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine without approval from the EU drugs agency.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that restrictions put in place to control the spread of coronavirus will be lowered to alert level one, from level three.
He said that restrictions put in place over the country's holiday period had succeeded in reducing infections levels - from 90,000 a week at the end of December, to 10,000 new infections last week.

FOCUS writes:

US researchers concerned: Dangerous and unassailable? New corona mutations are spreading rapidly in the USA

At the same time, Sars-CoV-2 mutations have appeared on the west and east coasts of the United States that are causing concern. The Californian variant seems to be more dangerous, the mutant in New York outwits the vaccination. And both are spreading very quickly.

It is in the nature of viruses that they do not stay the same for long. They change virtually with every transmission. They do this to adapt to any potential host and to ensure their maximum reproduction. In the case of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, at least 12,000 mutations were found after the first wave, none of which were of great importance.

In the meantime, however, mutations have emerged that have a significant impact on the pandemic. The mutants found in Great Britain, South Africa and Brazil have gained the upper hand over the original virus in many places. The mutations make it easier for the virus to penetrate human cells. They are definitely more contagious, and possibly also more dangerous for those infected in terms of the course of the disease and the risk of death. After all: The vaccines developed so far can apparently prevent infected people from becoming (seriously) ill even with the mutations.

Mutants common in California and New York

However, mutants have now emerged in the United States, adding to the great concern that vaccines will fail against them. Independently of each other, virus variants developed in California and New York that cause worry lines in virologists.

First, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Sars-CoV-2 variant called B1.427 / B1.429 is spreading rapidly in California. Still unknown in September, it was found in every second positive sample in January and will probably account for 90 percent of all infections in the state that is particularly badly affected by the pandemic by the end of March.

Worse than this high contagion dominance is the concern of scientists at the University of California at San Francisco that these mutations lead to more severe Covid-19 courses with higher mortality. Virologist Charles Chiu had been on the trail of the mutation since the end of last year.
Chiu now says that those infected had to go to the intensive care unit five times more often than Covid-19 patients with the original Sars-CoV-2 pathogen. The risk of death was eleven times as great. Other scientists do not yet want to share Chius' concern. The database of 324 patients would not allow such a dramatic conclusion.

Meanwhile, variant B1.526 is spreading in the New York region. Apart from the fact that it is also very contagious, it has a mutation that calls into question immunization after surviving Covid 19 disease or a vaccination.
Two research teams from the California Institute of Technology and Columbia University in New York independently discovered the E484K mutation in this variant. It is also known as the "escape mutation". Because of this change on their surface, the viruses can escape the antibodies that the immune system generates in response to the Sars-Cov-2 infection or the vaccination.

Reinfection by mutants is possible

Experts do not currently assume that this mutation will destroy immunization by the current vaccines. Richard Neher from the University of Basel said in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : "It is not yet a dramatic finding, because vaccinations are probably still very effective against serious illnesses." However, it is possible that people who are already using the original Sars -CoV-2 were infected, can infect with the mutant again. Such a reinfection would then probably be mild.

So far, the E484K mutation seems to occur wherever a large number of people have already been infected, such as in South Africa and Brazil before New York . Mutants with an "escape mutation" are on the rise in both countries.

Do you really need to post so much text Skybird, the amount of it I can cope with but your use of different colours is a bloody shambles, all I'm seeing is a black page with black writing with some white bolded entries here and there, why don't you go back and edit it so its compatible with the Smartdark theme.

I usually do not edit the colpours at all. Its the webpage software, sometimes it messes these things up all by itself, like the three empty lines thing. On bright page scheme I see it as black on white. Usually it gets automatically colour-translated if somebody is logged out or uses dark scheme. Sometimes things are messed up. You can quick-help yourself by inverting the text next time (mark it all).

Hope this colour now helps, its blue. If I would pick white, it could not be red in the white page scheme.

And dont tell Aktungbby, I always have him in bright green on white.

Officials in Japan have asked China to stop carrying out anal swab tests on Japanese citizens who enter the country, saying people have complained that it caused them "psychological distress".

China started carrying out anal swabs for Covid in January. The tests involve inserting a cotton swab 3-5cm (1.2-2.0 inches) into the anus and gently rotating it.

And Germany shoots another own goal. Read this story, it is so very, very, very illustrating for what goes wrong in Germany, and not just in context with corona.

Travellers entering Germany by plane now get a greeting SMS by the German government onto their cellphone. And what a message!

It shows how hopelessly and completely disconnected form reality the political caste and its minions doing the lower work really are. Völlig verspinnert.

https://translate.google.com/transla...-Funktion.html

Its a thinking like this that is responisble for why now aölmost 2 million doses of the AZ vaccine are shelved and do not get used over here. First they warn of it for highly abstract, theoretical reasons - and then they complain that people do not want it!

The Corona app was ruined for similar abstract reasons. Its useless the way it is, plain and simple.

But pushing government-Google data collecting and repoprting on all these things in of course super-gender-correct art-speak (the absurdities and tongue gym, natsics it leads to cannot be adequately translated in English, but it leads to news speakers who sometimes sound as if they suffer from hickup sionc ethey m ust no artifically interurpt words and discriminate certain syllabels).

Its not just infantility anymore. Its full-blown insanity.

Covid deaths in UK are down by a quarter, according to the Office for National Statistics.

There were 4,447 Covid deaths registered in the UK in the week of 19 February - down on the previous week (6,113)

Health officials are still trying to trace one person infected with a concerning coronavirus variant first found in Brazil.

The UK is preparing to hand out £408m to help museums, theatres and galleries in England reopen as restrictions ease.

Top US official warns of 'potential fourth surge of cases' as variants start to spread.

The devolved government in Northern Ireland is due to publish its plan to exit lockdown.

France will now give people between 65 and 74 the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, in a change to policy.

France has changed its stance on the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine – now it can be given to people with underlying health conditions in the 65-74 age group. Earlier France had restricted its use, saying there was not enough data from trials in older age groups. France now has 1.1m doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but by Saturday just 273,000 people had received that jab, French LCI news reports.

Germany is still not giving the AstraZeneca jab to the over-65s, but such a move is now under discussion. Germany also has large stocks of that vaccine waiting to be used.

German border police are now carrying out spot checks on people entering from the French Moselle region. They must have proof of a negative Covid test no more than 48 hours old. About 16,000 Moselle residents commute to Germany daily. They face having to get tested three times a week – it takes time and there is a fee in Germany, unlike in France. Germany is worried about the Brazil variant – there have been many cases of it in Moselle.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced plans to develop Covid vaccines with Denmark and Israel. The countries’ leaders are to meet in Israel on Thursday. Mr Kurz said the EU’s European Medicines Agency (EMA) was too slow to approve vaccines, and it was vital to be prepared for further mutations of the virus.

Slovakia – an EU member like its neighbour Hungary – is following Hungary’s example by accepting the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. Slovakia says it has just received the first batch of what will be two million doses. Yet the EMA has not yet approved Sputnik V.

Nigeria is due to receive nearly four million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine today in its first delivery from the global Covax scheme. The scheme is a UN-backed initiative designed to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines globally.

In Sri Lanka, the government has said Covid-19 victims from the minority Muslim and Christian communities will be buried on a remote island. The two communities have been angered by the forced cremation of their dead, while officials have argued that the burial of victims could contaminate ground water.

A total of 20,478,619 people have received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, UK government figures show.

And a further 844,098 people have had their second dose.

The search for the sixth person infected with the Brazil variant has narrowed to 379 households in the south east of England, Matt Hancock says.

The batch of home testing kits in question has been identified and each household is being contacted, he tells MPs

The person is one of six cases of the P.1 variant found in the UK in February.

A further 343 people have died with Covid-19 in the UK, daily figures show - down from 548 on Tuesday.

All secondary school pupils in Scotland to return to classrooms part-time from 15 March.

Northern Ireland leaders agree five-step plan to ease local lockdown - but without timetable.

As I said before, I do plan getting the vaccine but I'm certainly not in any rush.

VaxxTracker welcomes your participation to "provide those who have received any vaccination a safe place to report negative side-effects and assist developers as they work to perfect it. The VaxxTracker web site acts independently from all government, pharmaceutical, or lobbying groups. We represent those who have already received or those who are considering taking taking a vaccination."

Though I'm not sure how they know to separate spammers from actual patients submitting symptoms.

... is that doctors seldom report adverse events. When people get really sick or die after getting a vaccination the docs attribute that to anything but the vaccines. It’s been that way for years. Anyone who wonders aloud whether the Covid vaccines or other shots cause harm is immediately branded as “anti-vax” and “anti-science.” That’s a career-threatening consequence for health professionals.

Just 273,000 AstraZeneca doses have been administered in France out of 1.7 million received by the end of February, health ministry figures show. The utilisation rate for the other vaccines is much higher.

Impatient with the stuttering EU rollout, Austria and Denmark have said they are joining forces with Israel to produce second-generation coronavirus vaccines.

Serbia is donating 10,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab to its former wartime enemies in Bosnia, as several Balkan states struggle to procure vaccines.

Der Tagesspiegel writes:

Because vaccination is slow, a backlog of vaccination doses has developed in Germany. This could hit a record today, Tuesday. By March 1, 2021, over 8.8 million vaccine doses from Biontech / Pfizer, Astrazeneca and Moderna had been delivered to the federal states.

At this point in time, around 3.4 million vaccine doses have already been delivered and have not yet been vaccinated. According to the current status, the delivery of a further 324 million vaccine doses is planned.
