Default Police officer shot dead at Croydon Custody Centre

Quote:
A long-serving police officer has been shot dead at Croydon Custody Centre in south London.

The male sergeant was shot in the chest before the suspect turned the firearm on himself, sources have told the BBC.

The man had been brought to the custody suite in a police vehicle and the shooting happened during questioning about Covid-19, the BBC was told.

A minute's silence has been held for the officer described by the Met Police chief as a "much-loved colleague".

The victim, who has not been named, is thought to have been a few weeks away from retirement and was described as "one of a kind" by a colleague.

BBC Home Affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said it was believed the suspect - who is critically ill in hospital - was known to counter-terrorism police having been on their radar in the past, though the Met Police has not officially confirmed that.

No police firearms were discharged during the incident, which happened at about 02:15 BST at the Windmill Road centre.

How in the name of God is someone who is already known to counter-terrorism police not searched before being taken in a police vehicle to a custody suite?

Someone's head should role for this

Sad to hear. Strange that it can happen ... what went wrong? Really hope that a very careful investigation takes off.

Detectives investigating the murder of a police officer in south London have arrested a man on suspicion of supplying a firearm.
Sgt Matiu Ratana, from New Zealand, died in hospital on Friday after being shot in Croydon as a handcuffed suspect was being taken into custody.
Officers made the arrest at about 02:00 BST in Norwich.
The suspect in the shooting, who is thought to have shot himself, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

They have named the piece of waste material that is the suspect in the murder.

Quote:
Mr De Zoysa, 23, from Norbury, who is thought to have shot himself, is critically ill in hospital.
I'd save the tax payer thousands in medical and legal fees and potentially millions in incarceration fees and let him die.

Another man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying a firearm.
If found guilty, a long prison sentence should ensue.

What is the penalty scale for a serious violent crime against officials in the UK who are found guilty in this case?

No where near long enough.

Thankfully now were out of the EU he wont be able to get his conviction overturned and claim a right to family life in the ECHR.

Higher in this country as expected. In many cases, 18 years applies ... also for people in the legal system, there are cases where the person has been sitting "for life", which I think should apply. Many courts are drenched in communist ideology and offer rebates or some get away with forensic psychiatric care.

Quite happy with the judicial system tbh. Life means life but the judge (the people my issues lie with) then set the minimum term which in some cases has been as little as seven years

7 years for a life is a joke i think we do need a major revamp of the system. including dangerous driving laws for causing death while dangerous and careless driving.

When you leave the EU, you will have a greater opportunity to influence the laws and do not necessarily have to follow the law of the Union in its case law according to the principle of precedence.

Yes, the UK has left! Glad for you that it turned out that way. My money would have walked the same path if I had lived in the country.
