Default Book recommendations?

I've been scouring the local bookshops here in Iowa looking for a good book on WWII submarine operations in the pacific. So far without much success. Can anyone recommend a good read?

"Silent Victory" by Clay Blair is pretty much the Bible.

I also highly recommend "United States Submarine Operations in World War II" by Theodore Roscoe.

For personal accounts by ace skippers, try "Clear the Bridge" by Richard H. O'Kane or "Thunder Below" by Eugene B. Fluckey.

Hitler's Grey Wolves: U boats in the Indian Ocean by Lawrence Paterson.

Sorry just realised you said Pacific, but Indian ocean is its neighbour.

Bill has 4 direct hits! Go to the library on get the USSOiWW2 by T Roscoe. They re-printed it under the title of "Pigboats". It is in paperback.

I'll add "Taker Her Deep" by I.J. Gallatin (Cmdr USS Halibut).

Pigboats is the abridged version of Roscoe's mammoth work. It's a pretty good abridgement, but pales in comparison to the complete work IMO.

I'll add to the list...

Red Scorpion: The War Patrols of the USS Rasher by Peter T. Sasgen
Maru Killer: War Patrols of the USS Seahorse by Dave Bouslog
Find'Em Chase'Em Sink'Em: The Mysterious Loss of the WWII Submarine USS Gudgeon by Mike Ostlund
War in the Boats: My WWII Submarine Battles by William J. Ruhe
Spadefish: On Patrol with a Top-Scoring World War II Submarine by Stephen L. Moore

Harder to Find books:
Silversides by Robert Trumbull
War Fish by George Grider
Sink'Em All by Charles Lockwood
Hellcats of the Sea by Charles Lockwood
Through Hell and Deep Water by Charles Lockwood
War Patrols of the USS Flasher by William R. McCants

Fiction:
Run Silent, Run Deep and Dust on the Sea by Edward Beach--Excellent!!
Final Harbor, Silent Sea, and O God of Battles by Harry Homewood--Excellent!!
Bacalao by J.T. McDaniel
Pride Runs Deep by R. Cameron Cooke
Mission Tokyo Bay and Swordray's First Three Patrols by Clay Blair. Yep, the same Clay Blair! Quick reads and very entertaining.

A terrific reference book is Subs Against the Rising Sun by Keith M. Milton. This book lists out each boat's war patrols and confirmed successes by JANAC. Also each boat is pictured. Invaluable resource for the serious researcher.
