Estimates from the Office for National Statistics survey suggest that about 105,000 people in the UK would test positive for coronavirus in the week to 16 April, down from 130,000 people the previous week.
This is 0.16% of the population – or one in 610 people. The fall is mainly driven by declines in England. The ONS also says infections “decreased” in Scotland, but the week-on-week trend is less certain in Northern Ireland or Wales. The estimates for the UK nations compared with last week are: England: 1-in-610 are estimated to be testing positive for coronavirus compared with 1-in-480 last week. Wales: 1-in-840 compared with 1-in-920 last week Northern Ireland: 1-in-660 compared with 1-in-710 last week Scotland: 1-in-560 compared with 1-in-500 the week before.

This made me remember an issue in our news channel some weeks ago.
WHO is worried: The South African mutation have been found in Brazil. WHO is worried that the SA mutation shall mutate together with the Brazilian mutation. Markus

These are some of the reasons I'm cautiously optimistic with the current vaccine. The study by scientist is ongoing as there are a lot of unanswered questions. It really feels like clinical trials are being done worldwide and not in a controlled environment. Protocols not being followed.

A campaign is being launched to encourage younger people to get the Covid vaccine when their turn comes.
It comes as figures showed more than half of the UK's population have now received their first vaccine dose. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was a "brilliant milestone" but warned "the battle is not yet over" India has set another world record for the number of new coronavirus infections for a fourth day running. There were a further 349,691 cases in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, with another 2,767 lives lost. At least 82 people have been killed in a fire at a hospital treating coronavirus patients in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad. More than 100 were injured in the blaze, which erupted at the Ibn Khatib hospital on Saturday night. Some 8,000 spectators will attend the Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham as part of the official test programme. A man has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of assault after allegedly infecting 22 people with Covid.

Countries send aid to ease India's oxygen emergency.
International efforts are under way to help India as the country suffers critical oxygen shortages amid a devastating surge in Covid cases. The UK has begun sending ventilators and oxygen concentrator devices. EU members are also due to send aid. The US said it would provide raw materials for vaccines that had previously been under export controls. India's capital Delhi has extended its lockdown as overcrowded hospitals continue to turn patients away. The government has approved plans for more than 500 oxygen generation plants across the country to boost supplies. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-56881083

Shops, gyms, swimming pools, pubs and restaurants in Scotland are reopening after a four month-long lockdown.
Pubs and restaurants in Wales are also reopening to customers outdoors. The UK's most senior civil servant, Cabinet Secretary Simon Case is questioned by MPs about leaks from No 10 and how the government handled the pandemic. He says its probable an inquiry will not successfully identify the source or sources of a leak about lockdown talks, given the time that has passed. Boris Johnson denies he said he would rather see bodies pile up than go into a third lockdown, but sources tell the BBC that he did. The vaccine rollout in England is opening up to 44-year-olds. International efforts are under way to help India amid a devastating surge in cases. A Covid-safe, pared-down version of the Oscars in Los Angeles leaves TV critics underwhelmed.

The European Commission has announced it is taking legal action against vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca.
A spokesperson for the commission said some terms of the contract signed with AstraZeneca “have not been respected and the company has not been in a position to come up with a reliable strategy to ensure a timely delivery of doses”. Earlier this year AstraZeneca said its supplies would be reduced because of problems in one of its EU factories. The shortfall was expected to be about 60% in the first quarter of 2021. The EU called on AstraZeneca to honour its commitments and deliver the jabs it ordered by diverting doses manufactured in the UK. But AstraZeneca said it had to fulfil Britain’s order before it could send supplies made there abroad.
