However, if he did - he wouldn't have had time to get into the current position - his legs would still be in the act of coming together from a walking gait. Had he jumped to give himself the time needed to get into that position - he wouldn't be shown as that close to the walkway - he literally could lean his head back and break his skull on the way down.

Details make me call bull on that one.

I'm pretty sure that those aren't socks and shoes but rather divers wet suit booties.

As some one wrote a nice practice target and i think it is.

I do not see any problems for the US's ASW to find and perhaps if needed sink her.

However a well trained and determined crew, could get so near a CVBG that she can deliever a few eels against the Carrier, before she is detected or manege to disappear.

I Have very little knowledge about the US's ASW-doctrine, but I believe that they do NOT underestimate any threat.

Taking into consideration that in 2006 during an exercise Chinese SSK surfaced with in firing range from USS Kitty Hawk (CV-62), escorted by several surface vessels and at my understanding by two SSNs, I wouldn't put my bet on that.

Also in my undertanding that boat managed to slip away after it was noticed...

The RAN has a gallery of images taken from very close range, what they call an "underwater look", of the hull, screws and rudder of almost every class of US carrier, a tradition that started with the Oberons and continues with the Collins class today supposedly.

In another exercise the SSK Gotland was credited with the simulated sinking of the U.S.S Ronald Reagan -CVN-76.

Not quite...they were on a twelve month deployment tasked to assist the US in various exercises.

“We are deployed here for at least one year and will conduct up to 160 training days at sea, supporting strike groups, individual ships and rescue submarines, and participating in the tests and development of new equipment,” Ostbring said.

I think the boat has a "sail" not a "conning tower".

In the other hand, I don´t think a Kilo class sub, even older, could be underestimated, more if she is operating in the Persian Gulf.

On a Russian boat its called a 'fin'.

But it is highly doubtful that the Iranian's would operate their Kilos in the Gulf. There are large portions of the Gulf where the depths don't exceed periscope depth and others where it is only as deep as the length of the submarine. Their Ghadir class submarines are intended for orientations in the Gulf (hence the submarine tunnels at IRGCN bases in the Gulf), while the Kilos are meant for operations in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea (there is an Iranian naval base under construction/expansion near the border of Pakistan that is believed to be the new Kilo base).
