Default Realism Settings Question

Do the realism settings in the game work on this mod? The reason I ask is I started a new game and turned off dud torpedoes but all of my torpedoes are duds. From the tutorial to the main campaign. Does anyone have a work around for 100% dud torpedoes?

The reason I ask is because I have been working on getting the mod to work for the last few days and now that it is my last hurdle seems to be these torpedoes.

Which mod? TWoS?

Yes. In the main menu the options will apply for Historical missions only, in the bunker during campaign Options will apply for campaign only and you need to set these before going on patrol.

Campaign chapters in TWoS don't have any tutorial. If the first chapter launches with the tutorial, then you're playing the stock game, not TWoS. Maybe show us a screenshot from your main menu so we can judge what you are playing
Nobody will answer you questions about the stock game, simply because nobody plays it, it's full of bugs and unplayable (not only the torpedos).

In addition to the remarks above I would add that I found the magnetic and electric torpedoes to be very unreliable in general and have stuck with steam torpedoes for reliability reasons. As most of my attacks are at night or against freighters the chances of evasive action are fairly limited and indeed I now generally fire just one torpedo at each target. It is generally sufficient for the soft targets. Fishing boats and small freighters I will use the deck gun if the tactical and weather situation allows.

Also don't forget when starting a Wolves of Steel campaign to save in the bunker and then reload before you do anything else. This is fundamental according to the installation and operating instructions which I shall assume you have read

There are many excellent tutorials on youtube for the wolves of steel, and it is highly configurable via the options file editor viewer.

Initially in the Polish campaign I would concentrate on getting the basics right and build some experience. Things like minimising wake, boat aspect to target, firing position- all have a massive impact on the success or otherwise of your mission. As you leave harbour there are friendly escorts that you can practise firing solutions on, and also positioning your boat for an attack. Minimise periscope time too- don't ever leave it up, try to keep it to under 30 seconds maximum and preferably 10 seconds should be sufficient, keep the speed down to under 3 knots maximum to reduce periscope wake. Get your sonar man to track the target instead.. before you put it up ask yourself what you are looking for- if its a quick 360 keep it at that. Don't put it up to just look at the target..

Good luck Captain.

The important doc you need to read is called

'The_Wolves_of_Steel_2_2_Quick Start Manual and Gameplay Tips'. (in subfolder)

The name is misleading because it contains also a lot of game crashing scenarios and related stability tips, issues that you need to have in memory when playing. Especially when it comes to start your campaign and saving games correctly. SH5 is not a simple game, sorry...
The reading of this doc is tedious, and nobody is asking you to memorize its content. It's best to overfly it once to know what's about, and then use CTRL-F to search specific terms like 'torpedo', 'CTD' , 'hydrophone', 'campaign' etc. That way, you will find quickly what you are looking for.

You were right about me not playing TWoS - found a vid on the installation, my main looks nothing like that. Not sure what I could be doing wrong as I follow the instructions on the doc, going to follow his vid and see if that works. BTW thanks for helping me on this. After a half dozen tries I was getting a little frustrated lol

This means that you did NOT point the TWoS installer to the right folder where you sh5.exe is located. Redo the install and with the installer navigate to the right place before continuing the installation.

You can check this that way after installation of TWoS: With Windows Explorer go to your game folder. There should be a folder called "TWoS_Parts". If it's not there you did wrong with the installation.

You are correct! I have 2 drives in this system, one SSD and a platter on a raid and I had previously installed it on my SSD and decided to move it my platter - same string just a difference of C: vs D: - would have done it again except the guys pc was in French on the video so I had to scrutinize a little harder lol

That depends which "Full" installer version you did use when installing. The latest version of TWoS is 2.2.12 currently, this should appear in the main menu on the upper left. If it's a lower version then you need to also run the Update to 2.2.12, this one is much easier, but here too you need to point to the right game folder !!

I wish you good hunting after that, you will see: most of your previous game problems are now gone! Watch some tutorial videos to get used to the game interface, there are some very good ones.

Important:
Be sure to start a NEW career, a savegame comming from the stock game will spell trouble !

Cheers,
XS

Yep - deleted all my old saves to be sure. One question though, in the vanilla game you could select sectors on the map as your missions. I do not see the icon to choose a mission on this however. I do not mind being able to sail where ever, actually seems more fun that way. Was just curious.
