I found out that you make a full circle about love/hate of school as you progress.

When you're a todler you go: I want to go to school, I cant wait for autumn to see my friends

When you're a teenager: school sucks

When you go to faculty: I hope I go to school in autumn, I love school just let me pass the exams

The higher the education goes, the more likeminded people you are likely to meet. People who like history apply to study history. People who like fixing cars, apply to study car fixing. And then of course people who just are so dumb they can't breath on their own simply drop out because they don't pass even the entrance exams.

Not to mention that the higher the education goes, the more you are being treated as an adult. I'm not even expected to attend most of my classes as long as I get the job done properly. I get to study what I want when I want and how I want. Results speak for themselves.

So I repeat: school is cool.

Good point. Never saw it trough this angle. I like it.

But I was refering to the mood before the exams, when you pray you'll see the next year

Wait, can you be kicked out if you don't do well in certain exams?

We just fail courses and have to do them again. Not that I have ever heard of anyone I know doing so poorly, but it's theoretically possible I think. But it's technically no big deal. If you don't want to graduate, then that's your problem.

I may have sounded like that. You have a certain number of courses per year, one course, one exam (and the prerequisites like writing a paper and oral exams).
There is an X number of courses one must complete to go to the next year and Y number of courses one must complete to be allowed to go to the same year again (but he/she doesn't have to do the finished courses again). If you fall under the Y you get booted out of the faculty.
But, if you still want to continue the studies you sign a form of book-keeping for persons without status and you can still try to pass the exams and go to second year. It's just that you have to pay for the exams and they are not cheap and you loose the student status which means no state payed health insurance, no subsidized meals, no discount on transport tickets etc. I pay €40 per exam and those are among the cheapest in Slovenia.

Sounds like a smart system to me. Roots out at least some people with motivation problems, I imagine.

Here they'll give you 7 years to graduate. The usual time is 5 years, but you are allowed to study 7. If you haven't graduated after that and don't have extra special good reason why you haven't, they will boot you out. The problem here is that the years you spent in school are mostly wasted that way and in no way productive to the society.

However, our social welfare system watches how much you study per year. If you don't get certain amount of credits, they won't pay you student allowance. If you can manage without it (I for one can), then it's not their headache how much you study.

That was pretty cool...reminded me of some of the music played by Focus.

It used to work until the EU came with their bologne system. Prevoius system was very leniant when it came to studying time.

We have the regular and the iregular system. Regular is that you study for free (no tuition) with full student benefits and you can take two years to finish one year (provided you complete the Y number of exams). Very practical if you have a young fammily to suport, which many have. But you have to finish it until you're 26 years old. You can still go to faculty as a regular but you loose the student benefits and you can only sign up for a first year somewhere as regular.
The iregular system has no limitations and is the smartest thing in our country. You can study irregular no matter what your age and you only have classes on fridays and saturdays, perfect for employed people that want to advance but lack the education. You pay for one year and you have 3 years to complete one year (but the exams are free for onyl one year) But the tuition can be pretty high, I'm paying €1500 per year. In some cases your employer will pay for your tuition if it is in their interest. You blundered when you were young and foolish and want to catch up, no problem. Student benefits until you're 26 even in this system.

But as I said, the bologne system is screwing everything up. It puts more work and pressure on the student, having less time for some after school work, puting more presure on their parents and making it imposible for people with a young fammily to study. Plus achieving WORSE results, spiting out graduates with ZERO work experiance.
I'm slowly starting to agree with Skybird

Scene from my hometown today

A passenger train collided head-on with a freight. Luckily it was near the station where both trains slowed down. No fatalities, one was suverely injured and had to be taken to Ljubljana medical center. This happened half an hour after I left a pub only 30m away from the site
