Default IRAI 0.0.37

Wife is pissed. Stayed up all night eluding 8 IRAI 37-equipped destroyers and ooooo they were mad! Pattern-running torpedoes are my weapon of choice at this stage of the war (1944). Have had very good luck with them. Shoot and scoot and then deep and creep. No more shooting gallery, now we're in a war!

Sounds like you are having fun with it

How is the AI now in your opinion? Is there anything that I should concentrate on fixing/improving? My goal was to remove the 'all-knowing' part of the AI and have them act like they didn't know where you were and thus had to actively search for you.

We're having some fun now

TDW,

Sorry, I had a previous synopsis for you but my damn ISP went down as I tried to post it. Here's what I remember:

I always felt the escorts in 0030 didn't use their ASDIC enough to find me. Not now. With all the pings, my ears are sill ringing from wearing headphones so I wouldn't wake my wife.

After attacking a convoy, got a huge response from the escorts. I foolishly stayed at periscope depth to admire my work when they spotted my scope or tracked the torpedoes' bubble trail back to me. Either way, they zeroed in on me. Not right away, but quicker than with 0030. I used to stay at periscope depth because it was somewhat easy to escape. That might not be an option now.

They seemed to be using an expanding search pattern to find me. It looked like they took a section of ocean and methodically searched it. I don't normally do this but I was having so much fun that I decided to have a look up top to see all this and saw they had commited 8 destroyers to the search . . . 8 very pissed-off destroyers; a proper response.

Just when I thought I had given them the slip, they would go active with ASDIC and start blasting again. Wound up pushing the limits of the pressure hull. Crew's nerves were rattled but the Old Man eventually got them to safety.

I love this because now I must use my experience to escape rather than just going deep, shutting it down and going silent.

Also, had just started a previous patrol when attacked by a Mosquito bomber coming in low and fast. Got him as he flew over the boat but his bomb detonated close enough to the boat that the diesels and batteries took serious damage so I had to limp back to port.

Great job tweeking the AI. If they were "all knowing" I don't think I would have escaped. It seems balanced. Just enough that if I made a mistake they would sink me but if I made good decisions, I'd skip out of there. A lot of fun!

A good test might be when I use the pattern-running torpedoes on a convoy at night. They can hit a ship on the opposite side of a convoy. I'd like to see what the escorts do when it looks like there's a U-boat on that side. If they come after me regardless, then we know there's more tweaking to be done IMHO. Those torpedoes cause a lot of havoc!

If it's cool with you, I'll let you know if I see an inappropriate response from the AI.

Ubisoft should pay you modders royalties. For me, the game is unplayable without you guys.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Now you have to take lots more into consideration . How deep is the area . Shadow the convoy to see how many escorts . Do i radio the convoy in and if so do i wait for other uboats . Is the convoy worth attacking . What defences do i have available . Do i go to scapa flow = NO .

Please do It's the only way I can attempt to make the mod better The feedback you all give me tells me what I need to work on.

Good news

TDW,

OK. Good news. Firing a spread of pattern runners on a night attack, a ship on the far side of the convoy was hit. The escorts then responded to that side of the convoy. It seems that all the escorts went active at that point because the destroyers closer to me acted like they had detected me but I gave them the slip.

To me, that shows that when they have a solid contact, they prosecute it vigorously (evidenced by them pounding the hell outta me). That fact that I was able to slip away soon after the attack makes me think they weren't sure I was there. They gave up soon after.

Unlike the AI in the original Silent Hunter, which seemed "all knowing", this version of IRAI seems pretty well balanced. Hopefully, this cuts down on the ridiculous tonnage totals.

So far so good!

Now enemy ASW is something to fear.

Recently I approached an enemy port at night and sunk a great deal of ships.

An enemy convoy had just left the port hours ago but the destroyers from the convoy came straight back to the port to find me after they got word of me being there.

But what was most impressive was that they tried to trap me in! they encircled around the exit to the port and sat on the surface constantly searching with sonar.

I found a gap and escaped but ..WOW!... what a tense night for the crew ahaha

This mod is amazing

One thing i notice though is destroyers seem to move around the submarine sometimes when searching for you. they come towards where they think I am but instead of keeping a straight line going right over me they seem to turn and move around me quite often... dont know why this is.

Default Interesting

Saw something interesting. After a submerged daylight convoy attack and once I had managed to wriggle out of the escort's search pattern, I was far enough away to safely come to periscope depth. Panned around to see what was going on.

As I scanned around I saw something I had never seen before in the Silent Hunter series: Two destroyers on fire. I was a lone wolf on this attack so it wasn't other U-boats and I had used my last torpedo on a freighter which sank. Just to make sure I went to the external cam and took a look at their hulls: No torpedo damage. The only other explanation I can think of is that they collided. Has anybody else seen anything like this before?

Don't know if this has anything to do with 0037 but it's kinda cool. With all this going on around me, I'd like to see it as it unfolds but I guess that would be cheating; would be fun though.

Such things were known to happen in SH3 and 4, so maybe some of that AI made it to SH5?

Yes it can happen and does happen sometimes This is especially prevalent when a big capitol ship is around or is the leader of the group. It's not a common occurence but does seem to happen more when TC > 1.

Actual i see no tactical shortcomming to call for reinforcement via radio transmission. IMO the possiblitiy of the enemy to determine the approximate location of my transmission is in IRAI not modelled. You can send radio messages as much as you like and you will not give your position away.
The same is also true for the U-Boat sonar.

IRAI has no part in this (and in fact I couldn't control it if I wanted to). This is the game itself that fails to respond.
