YES, we have a winner!
This species is being called a »GRYF« in Burroughs' "Tarzan the terrible" from 1921! The 8th book of the Tarzan stories and being different, certainly due to WW1 and its consequences.

"In the previous volume, the Lord of the Jungle discovered the burnt corpse of his wife, Jane, after a visit to his African home by german soldiers. (One suspects that Burroughs never did like Jane; this sort of thing happened to her a lot.)

In this volume, Tarzan learns that Jane was not murdered by the Germans but kidnaped - and sets off in pursuit. As the novel begins, Tarzan has spent two months tracking his mate to Pal-ul-don ("Land of Men"), a hidden valley in Zaire, where he finds a land dinosaurs and men even stranger -- humanoids with tails. Ta-den is a hairless, white-skinned, Ho-don warrior; O-mat is a hairy, black skinned, Waz-don, chief of the tribe of Kor-ul-ja. In this new world Tarzan becomes a captive -- but he impresses his captors so well that they name him Tarzan-Jad-Guru ("Tarzan the Terrible"). Meanwhile, a second visitor has come to Pal-ul-don -- wearing only a loin cloth and carrying an Enfield rifle along and a long knife. Pal-ul-don is where Jane is being held captive, of course. . . "

In a way yes, but as said before we needed the name this species is called in Burrough's tale And after milions of years it has changed and adapted, grew bigger and became carnivorous. Only in the land of Pal-Ul-Don of course, and in fiction.
It also grew spikes on its back, which was especially misleading here (insert evil wink)

It's colours are exacty depicted by Burroughs, also that it had "no own smell, but could follow and hunt almost all other creatures" with perseverance, with its own "excellent sense of smell". It could kill almost all other creatures, but some people of Pal-Ul-Don had discovered a certain loud cry like "whee-ooo" while banging a stick against its collar shield, that would make the Gryf obey to the human..
The evil german was Jad-ben-Otho, a former german officer who became a high priest in this strange land when he lost contact to his regiment, and he had of course captured Jane. Some adventurous stories these were..

Over to Aktungbby, well deserved though others were close.. again Aktung was a beak ahead (probably related to his special relationship to this creature )

Same with me b.t.w.. as a boy I read the comic in the 1960ies in english; while i knew of Triceratops earlier. I wondered why they did not call it a Tric. in the book and comic, but of course the species had changed over millions of years and this was "dichterische Freiheit". They also had/have life-size models of the Tric. in Disneyland; all this and a general interest in earth's history was one of the reasons to later study geology/paleontology..

Fortunately I used to Burrough myself in Tarzan comics...when I wasn't reading My Ol' Shatterhand and Manitou novels by Karl May Speaking of the 'warrior motif', what's this?

BINGO! Kiribati ceremonial combat armor with a blowfish helmet(lethal if consumed as ill prepared sushi); @ Jimbuna: the plant is the woven sennet-coconut fiber body armor worn with the helmet. BUDDAHAID takes it!
