It's called a "setting board" over here... I don't pursue this hobby any more for reasons of conscience but it was a damn good one, incorporating fresh air, sport and exercise in beautiful locations, followed by this very relaxing and creative phase, along with the whole collecting and academic interest. These days I confine my activities to photography

A extremely strange item. And I wonder why I've never come across those in my entomology courses at university where "needle work" was a frequent task. We used simple styrofoam blocks.

I remember an incident from my freshman year: The first insect to pin down was a common cockroach: quite big, quite firm and if the student failed, a new one was always available from the department's own breed. The roaches were killed by deep freezing before the course. In that year the student assistant whose job was it to prepare the insects had taken them out of the fridge much too early. They were numbed, not dead. So when we came back from our lunch break we were saluted by a bunch of needled roaches flailing their legs in agony.

Well we did not have this at the preparation course at university either, we also did (dead) cockroaches and a few small moths.

So I never saw this before, how is this 'board' even called?

edit ah ok "Pin thru the insect onto the notch of the mounting board so it is not tilted and so that the wings will be flat to the spreading board. Make sure the insect doesn't move when positioning the wings Place paper over the wing ..."
